A new update is coming to Super Mario Maker 2, and it’s bringing a bit of Hyrule with it.
In a surprise announcement this morning, Nintendo revealed the 2.0 update for the popular Mario course maker. Alongside new enemies and elements for your courses, and a speedrun mode, the update adds Link as a playable character through the use of a Master Sword power-up.
The item works in a similar way to the original Super Mario Maker’s Amiibo mushrooms — but it isn’t just a re-skin this time. The Master Sword transforms Mario into Link, who brings with him a small arsenal of weapons and special moves. Not only can Link swing his sword to take out enemies, but he can use arrows to extend his reach and bombs to take out breakable structures. His shield offers protection against attacks, and he can dash attack or down-thrust through enemies. Supply multiple Master Swords in a multiplayer course, and each Link will be assigned a colored tunic in a callback to the Four Swords games.
Like the past Amiibo mushroom, this power-up is available only in the original Super Mario Bros. style. It makes us wonder if Nintendo is cooking up an 8-bit styled Legend of Zelda maker! For now, however, you can flex your imagination and create some Zelda-themed levels when the 2.0 update launches on 12/5/2019.
