Medli’s Melodies: A warrior’s melody, 8-bit style

It’s no secret that Twilight Princess has a superb soundtrack comprised of numerous magnificent songs. There’s never a moment in the game when the music doesn’t draw the player in and bring the world of Hyrule to life. The only issue people have with the soundtrack is that it is synthesized rather than being performed by a live orchestra.

Yes, a upgrade in quality would be nice, but the same could be said about the reverse. What about versions of the song that can take us back to the classic days of Zelda? Well, the arranger TwoFaceDK have us covered, as witnessed by their 8-bit remix of the hidden skills training theme.

The original version of this track carries a lot of intensity whenever it’s played in Twilight Princess, it’s purpose being to convey the rigorous training Link must endure to become a hero. I’m happy to say (and hear) that this emotional impact was not lost in the shift to chiptune. It’s less dynamic, but the pacing of the song and the weight of the notes are the most important components of the song, and TwoFaceDK did a good job of preserving both. Their effort makes this arrangement sound like it belongs alongside tracks found in games like A Link to the Past and the early Final Fantasy titles.

Chiptune versions of modern songs always find ways to help me enjoy my favorite tracks as though they are brand-new experiences. If you enjoy revival via retrolike I do, do yourself a favor and check out what else TwoFaceDK has to offer.
