Xbox and Nintendo have been looking more and more like best friends recently, leading to rumors of Xbox GamePass possibly on the way to Switch. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has weighed in with his view on the subject through a recent enticing interview with Giant Bomb.
When asked when GamePass might be available on Nintendo Switch, Spencer stated, “I have said over time I’d like to take GamePass everywhere — I’d put GamePass on the toaster if I could.”
He then went on to reiterate the strong relationship Xbox has with Nintendo, discussing Minecraft Dungeons’ upcoming launch on Nintendo Switch and the Banjo-Kazooie DLC reveal for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
“I want to have the best console experience because of what it gives you,” he continues. “I want to be sitting on the couch with an amazing experience; it sounds great, I have access to any game that I want to play, and if I want to take that while I’m on the go, I think the Switch is a really cool platform for that; it’s just that in the near-term, it’s kind of hard for us to priortise different than we are today.”
You would be forgiven for thinking you were in the midst of some sort of crazy, gamer-driven, paradisal dream sequence given the history between Nintendo and Microsoft. It’s a rivalry which has just become friendlier and cozier to the benefit of happy gamers across the globe, especially with the shared historical relationship with Rare thrown into the mix.
Microsoft-owned properties like Minecraft have previously integrated with the Super Mario universe. With Banjo-Kazooie now making their first appearance on a Nintendo system since 2005’s Banjo-Pilot on the Game Boy Advance, the co-operation between the two gaming giants are paying glorious dividends to the happiness of gamers in recent times.
It’s clear that the ultimate vision for GamePass is to take it anywhere, but with the challenges presented by the myriad of Android devices, it will take some time for that to be conquered before the Switch can even be considered as a new home for GamePass.
