Yuga’s Art Gallery: Link and Spyro

My journey with The Legend of Zelda started in about 2006 when I played The Wind Waker for the very first time, but my interest in video games started long before then. My step sisters had a Playstation that they’d bring over on the weekends and they would let me play my first video game ever, Spyro: Ripto’s Rage. To this day this game is still very near and dear to my heart. I’ve been eating up every second of it in the new Reignited Trilogy, and Spyro as a whole will always be a favorite of mine. Now combine Spyro and The Legend of Zelda and you definitely have my attention.

Nordeva has created beautiful artwork of Link riding atop of Spyro, which if I didn’t know any better, looks like official artwork for a game I would totally play. Spyro looks like he just flew in from the Reignited Trilogy while Link seems to have taken inspiration from his upcoming Link’s Awakening game. Each of the characters is, of course, accompanied by their respective companions: Sparx and Navi (or just a random fairy. I don’t know.)

It’s interesting that the artist drew the characters facing away from the viewer, having their backs facing the “camera”, so to speak. While it’d be nice to have their faces front and center, this angle absolutely works. It makes it feel like the two heroes are headed out on another adventure, venturing off into the horizon. In a way, it feels reminiscent of the loading screens from Spyro.

It’s funny how I never thought of putting these two franchises together. It makes perfect sense with the fantastical worlds both games offer, but perhaps being that Spyro is a dragon would set off Link’s heroic instincts and he’d feel inclined to fight. That and Sony and Nintendo are direct competitors and the likeliness of seeing this in reality is very slim: But all that aside, at least there are wonderful artists like Nordeva who can bring these childhood fantasies to life.
