In the recent Nintendo Treehouse segment on the Link’s Awakening remake, the team were fortunate enough to play the game alongside Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma.
Aonuma said that he’s “always wanted to remake this title,” and that now seemed like the perfect time to do so. “Breath of the Wild broke the convention of Zelda, and now because a lot of people have played Breath of the Wild, they can go back to something more traditional like Link’s Awakening, and we hope that this gameplay will be fresh for people.”
Aonuma is more than just enthusiastic about the game, however; he went on to explain how Link’s Awakening’s characters made an impact on him. “They’re lively, they’re comical, but they also bring tears to your eyes. A lot of that influenced what I had to do when I was developing Zelda going forward.”
It’s no wonder this is the case, considering the unforgettable cast of Link’s Awakening. Dan Owsen, translator of the original game, also joined Aonuma and the Treehouse crew and shared thoughts on his favorite character, Sale. “I don’t know why he stuck in my mind, but I just thought it was very funny that there was an alligator named Sale who would sell you things!”
Aonuma also shared his personal favorite. “My favorite character is BowWow! He’s kind of a familiar face from the Mario series. I won’t go into too much detail because I don’t want to go spoiling everything, but I honestly hope that I can travel the whole world with BowWow!”
