Dungeons have always been a staple in the Zelda franchise, but the new Link’s Awakening is taking the concept in a new direction. For the first time, players will be able to make their own custom dungeons.
The new trailer from Nintendo’s E3 stream showed this briefly, but we got a much better look at this interesting new feature in their Nintendo Treehouse afterwards.
These player-made dungeons are called Chamber Dungeons, and they are built room by room into a heart-shaped grid. There are a few simple rules: you need an entrance, all doors have to connect somewhere, and you must have a Nightmare room (where the boss lurks). There are locked doors that require keys, which can be found in chests also scattered throughout the dungeon. Rooms will be filled with puzzles and enemies.

Completing Chamber Dungeons grants rupees, and the more rooms in the dungeon, the greater the reward. You are also timed and can challenge yourself or friends to beat the high score. There will be additional challenges in Chamber Dungeons, although there isn’t much information on these yet. The one that Treehouse staffers talked about was “Fill Up Your Hearts,” which required building a dungeon using every space on the heart-shaped grid. The new Link amiibo will also play a role, which you can read more about that here.
