I know people have had many polarized opinions about dubstep, especially during its first years, but who am I to say no to a fine video game music remix — no matter the genre it is interpreted in. There are countless dubstep renditions of well known themes everywhere, but in my humble opinion, one of the best remixers out there is none other than Ephixa.
Opening up with a soft beat, this piece smoothly transitions into a nice piano playing the melody of Dragon Roost Island’s theme, later joined by a bit of flute. All of this building up to then be accompanied by that powerful bass that dubstep is known for and more upbeat drums. This cycle of calm melody to bass in a blender repeats a couple times throughout the song, which gives you some time to take a breath and relax form all the dubstep dancing this piece will inevitably make you do. Although it might sound repetitive, it is actually very easy on the ears because, unlike almost every dubstep song there is, the main focus is always the melody and not the unstructured noise of cats being boiled alive.
And that is not all! If you need even more variety, how about we add some vocals? Well, singer Veela and rapper NoneLikeJoshua have done just that: they added vocals to this remix both individually and together, so there are three vocal versions of it so you can enjoy it in many ways. I will not include the vocal remixes here because of the explicit lyrics, but you can find them easily with a quick search for this one. Whatever style you prefer, I’m sure you’ll like one or more of these remixes!
