I’ll be honest, I’m tired of metal covers of video game music that only recreate the melody with an electric guitar. But every now and then, a remixer comes along that twists things around and not only adds their own style, but also brings someone else’s talent into the mix.

Medli’s Melodies is a series in which we choose our favorite songs from The Legend of Zelda franchise, or highlight a special piece of music from the perpetually creative fan community. Music has always such been such an integral component of Zelda games, and we’re here to celebrate that every week!

Such is the case of ToxicxEternity, a well-known remixer putting a metal twist into a theme I’m sure is in everyone’s favorites list: “Midna’s Lament” from Twilight Princess. Not only did he give this iconic theme a heavy, yet melodic tone, but he also invited over insaneintherainmusic to add the smooth and soothing tone of jazz. The result is a combination of swift sax and piano with electric guitars, making a beautiful piece with mood swings accurately fitting to the scene in which the theme originally plays.

Speaking of the original theme itself, it’s undoubtedly one of the best from the game. It truly makes you feel the desperation of trying to save Midna; it is then that you realize just how much you really care for her. It is unbelievable how a theme with a few notes arranged in the correct order can make you feel so deeply for a virtual life. And despite how short and repetitive the music is, these two artists managed to mix it with just the right amount of each instrument to make each part of it unique.
