It’s that time of the year again: another month of mushrooms — and mayhem! That’s right, the third annual Month of Mushrooms and Mayhem is set to start up really soon.

What is Month of Mushrooms and Mayhem?

Also known as MOMAM, “Month of Mushrooms and Mayhem” is an annual streaming event on Twitch beginning on March 1 and ending March 31. During the month-long event, two streamers compete in a series of back-to-back video game races. The players are awarded points based on performance, and whoever has the most points at the end of the month is the winner!

MOMAM began in March of 2016 when two Twitch streamers, Iateyourpie and Spikevegeta, introduced the event under a different name: “Month of Mushrooms and Masterswords”. The first event came down to the wire, but Spikevegeta won by just one point on the final day. The had competed in a variety of Super Mario and Legend of Zelda games.

In 2017, the event returned with a new name: Month of Mushrooms and Mayhem. The series of games was expanded to include other Nintendo franchises, and after the dust had settled, Iateyourpie was declared the winner by just one point.

The event returns on March 1 again this year. This timeIateyourpie and Spikevegeta return to compete once again! This year’s event includes new games, returning favorites, and will introduce new twists on old challenges. Expect the event to be more chaotic than ever before!

Event schedule and prizes

Since we’re all about Zelda, we like to pay close attention to the Zelda races taking place. There are three Zelda races this year:

  • Monday, March 5 at 7pm EST: Breath of the Wild eight-hour shrine challenge
  • Sunday, March 18 at 7pm EST: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  • Sunday, March 25 at 2pm EST: Ocarina of Time: Master Quest

The Ocarina of Time: Master Quest race will become a three-heart challenge if a bonus incentive of $4,000 in donations is reached. In addition, a fourth Zelda race will be added and the event will be extended to April 4 if $6,500 is raised. The final race is an A Link to the Past randomizer challenge, which will take place on April 4 at 7pm EST if the bonus incentive is met.

In addition to Zelda, the schedule includes races of Super Mario Odyssey, a Pokemon “Gotta Catch ’em All” challenge, Donkey Kong 64, and many more. The full event schedule has been organized into a spreadsheet for easy viewing. Make sure you check the schedule so you don’t miss your favorite games!

Of course, community events are more fun when there are prizes. You can enter to win a $50 USD Nintendo eShop gift card by visiting the official MOMAM3 website. Details about how to enter the giveaway can be found near the bottom of the page.

The grand prize is a Nintendo Switch with $300 USD Nintendo eShop gift cards, to get you started with all your favorite games (and your favorite is of course Zelda). The grand prize is awarded by submitting your predictions for who will win each event. You earn a point for each prediction you accurately guess, and your odds of winning the grand prize increase with every point you earn.

You can submit your predictions by filling out the official voting form. Please note that you will need a Twitch account to participate.

You can learn more about MOMAM3 at their official website: StreamBIG.net/MOMAM3. This event is not for charity, and all proceeds benefit the event organizers.
