Over the years, the original Legend of Zelda has seen many re-releases and numerous revisions for its text. However, one mistake has been prevalent in every version, except the recently released NES Classic version of the game.

The Old Man in Level 1 of the first Zelda tells the player that “EASTMOST PENNINSULA IS THE SECRET.” Besides being an incredibly vague statement, it is also a misspelled one. Curiously enough, it’s an error that hasn’t been rectified until now.

Clyde “Mato” Mandelin, author of the recent Legends of Localization Book 1: The Legend of Zelda, shared the comparison. The image with the original text is on the left, while the NES Classic version is on the right.

If you’re at all interested in the various changes and revisions the original Legend of Zelda has received over time, you can find a handy list of them over on Legends of Localization.

It’s a correction nearly thirty years in the making, but better late than never!

Cool. Now let’s talk about the kerning on “eastmost.”

On what console is this new loz version?

With the NES Classic unfortunately discontinued, let’s see if the correction still stands on any and all subsequent re-releases (including Switch Virtual Console). It probably will. Companies hire much better translators nowadays.
