Firstly, let me welcome you to the first Music Monday column of 2017! Hopefully everyone had a great new year celebration and any readers who indulged a little too heavily are back to feeling their best!
I’m opening my account for the year with a really enjoyable arrangement and a performance that perfectly matches the feel and evocations of the original piece. Mart0zz brings us a wonderful cover of the Dragon Roost Island theme from The Wind Waker, played on the striking (*ahem*) marimba.
I’ve always loved the original piece; there’s a high tempo to the backing melody that gives the sense of rambling adventure, and an undulating scale that effortlessly conjures up images of craggy beaches building into blustery mountain ledges. It’s a masterclass in replicating the themes for a level in both the visuals and the accompanying music.
Whilst originating in Central America, the marimba and it’s lovely, full sounding notes are so reminiscent of the Caribbean life that it adds to this imagery beautifully — you can almost feel the sunshine on your face and the balmy winds tousling your hair. The bass guitar adds a rich depth that, I realise after a few listens, reminds me greatly of another outstanding Nintendo soundtrack set amidst tropical climes, Donkey Kong Country Returns.
I mean, what’s not to like here? Even the video has fruit frivolously strewn around (including a banana that I feel is garnered unfair favouritism), our performers clad in Niko’s famous red striped shirt and a so-bad-it’s-good beach background. It’s fair to say that I’m in love with this — the whole thing — all of it.
May 2017 bring you all the sunshine, adventures and frivolous fruit you all deserve!
