For all of you theorists out there, The Legend of Zelda has been one of the most dissected video game sagas of all time. Majora’s Mask is usually at the frontline of these discussions, with its particularly dark plot and tragic back stories. The popular YouTube channel The Game Theorists even speculated that Link may have died in the very beginning of the game — after all, he has been met with a terrible fate, hasn’t he?

In the most recent issue of Game Informer magazine, Majora’s Mask producer Eiji Aonuma discussed whether or not the game is a symbolism of the five stages of grief that someone may experience when dealing with a great hardship or loss. For those who are unaware, the five stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance. Game Informer mentioned in their interview that there are several instances where characters in Majora’s Mask emulated these emotions. The townsfolk are in denial that a enormous moon is going to crush their existence, Lulu in Zora’s Domain is battling with depression, and the ghost in Snowhead is begging to return to the world of the living.

Aonuma acknowledges that these emotions are represented, saying “It’s certainly true that each one of these different episodes you talked about has a different emotional cast to it…But, I also want to point out that it’s not that each one of these episodes only has the one emotion that they are conveying.” Aonuma goes on to explain that part of the purpose of experiencing these quests and interacting with the characters is that the player connects with the emotions being conveyed and uses them as a striving point to complete the missions.

Undoubtedly, Majora’s Mask is a harrowing journey for Link and players alike. Theories aside, it ultimately produces a powerful message of helping others in a time of need. Now with its release on the Nintendo 3DS, there is a whole new generation of Legend of Zelda fans that will begin to experience its timeless tale.
