This week the mailbag is presented by Bastian, the News Editor for the Zelda Universe site and occasionally writes a story here and there.

isaac20787: is skyward sword ur new favourite zelda game now?

Bastian: Yes, actually, it is. Or at least it might tie with my previous favorite A Link to the Past. I think Skyward Sword took everything that made the 3D styled Zelda games and improved upon it by leaps and bound with the advent of motion control sword fighting and such. I also feel like the visual style is truly the Zelda I remember from decades ago, because the bright colors and such remind me so much of the official artwork for The Adventure of Link , A Link to the Past, and Link’s Awakening. Skyward Sword feels like getting to play that artwork brought to life in 3D.

supporteedcoffee: Do you like the idea of a sequel of majoras mask?

Bastian: No. While I enjoyed Majora’s Mask for what it was, I have never replayed it because once was enough for me. I’m much more a fan of the traditional Zelda structures, so I would not look forward to another game where I had to stalk people by the hour and anticipate where they are to give them a bar of soap or whatever. I’d rather bomb some Dodongos.

MrUBtrollin2: I have a question, in all Zelda games we hear about these “wars” that happened but we never actually see them and/or play them why not? And would you like to see a lord of the ring based zelda game!

Bastian: When I think of Lord of the Rings, I don’t really think of wars. I think of a band of friends trying together to defeat a great evil. Zelda is more of a single player experience, so I cannot see a main Zelda game outside of the Four Swords series featuring multiple players, but I suppose it could work. If, however, you are focusing on the war aspect, then to tie that into your first question: I think there are two reasons why we never experience these wars in the games. First: because Zelda is a game of dungeons and puzzles and single player adventures, not battlefields and mass armies, that would stray too far from the Zelda formula. Secondly: the wars are just to provide us with a backstory for why things are so grim that a lone hero needs to arise and prevail where a whole army failed.

Johnsixxisthebeast: Cody, In Majora’s Mask, Link is a few years older than when he was in Ocarina of Time. But at the end of OoT, Link was older than he was in Majora’s mask. Does this mean Link saved Termina before ever saving Hyrule?

Bastian: At the end of OoT Link was older than he was in Majora’s Mask? In the adult timeline, yes. But he was sent back to the child timeline and then at some point after that he went to Termina. So any way you look at it he was older (chronologically and physically) in Majora’s Mask.

TheKayasto: Ok, so, Impa in SS and Impa in OoT, OBVIOUSLY 2 different Sheikah…so why do they have the same name? That’s all that really bothers me about that because we already know why Impa in OoT has been guarding Zelda from birth and such what with being of the Sheikah clan and being servants of the goddess (Hylia/Zelda) but why have the same name? Only thing I can come up with is she was named after the Impa in SS or something

Bastian: To begin, the fact that there are two people with the same name centuries apart should not be too terribly surprising. There are probably at least several people living now who share your first name.
But more specifically about Impa, the first Impa ever mentioned was from the very first game. She was an elderly woman, Zelda’s nursemaid, who tells Link the basic plot of the game and only appears in the instruction manual. She also appears in the instruction manual of the second game, again telling Link the plot. We learned recently from Hyrule Historia that her name comes from the word “impart” because she often imparts upon Link the details he needs to know in order to defeat the evil in that game. There’s a similar Impa in the Oracle games who serves the same purpose. And then of course is the woman Impaz in Twilight Princess who could very well be that game’s Impa. This is a round about way of saying: there is an Impa in most Zelda games, and her role is to give you key plot points. There’s probably no relation between them other than that. Perhaps they’re all reincarnations of the same person, but to assert so would be fan fiction as there’s no evidence to suggest such a thing.

ordonlink259: At the end of skyward sword fi goes into the master sword to sleep and waits to see link in the future (possibly reincarnated). Then why isn’t fi even seen in any other games by a link who picks up the master sword? Are they going to make a game to explain where fi went like how Ghirahim was killed when Demise took the sword from inside Ghirahim?

Bastian: Fi says that she will sleep in the Master Sword forever, this is clearly a sleep she will not awaken from, which is why we never see her again in future Zelda games in the timeline. When she says that she hopes to see Link again, I feel this is just Nintendo trying to give us added depth of feeling when we replay Ocarina of Time, because we now know that Fi is there, in the Master Sword.

Rei96: Skyward Sword question! So at the end of the game, you get the Triforce to wish Demise dead… and you succeed. But you end up going to the past to defeat Demise again – albeit the more traditional way. But wouldn’t that render everything you did in the future… well, pointless? And how come nothing has changed in the future because of what happened in the past? Demise having “conquered time” doesn’t seem to answer these questions to me. Your opinions/theories?

Bastian: I feel like a lot of people try to make scientific sense out of these fairytales and legends. Trying to apply science fiction-y notions of time travel to a fairytale makes as little sense as literally jumping off a skyscraper holding onto a chicken and expecting a nice glide and soft landing. What I mean by this that Zelda does not follow our physics very strictly in many ways, so it needn’t do so in its version of time travel either. In Zelda we can alter things in the past to only then bring about a change in the future. Demise wasn’t defeated in the past until after you actually did so.
