Skyward Sword, reconfirmed for a 2011 release

We haven’t been hearing much from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword recently. Most of the new Legend of Zelda news has been new information about Ocarina of Time 3D, leaving fans wondering if Skyward Sword was going to skip the Wii and get a release on Nintendo’s upcoming home console, nicknamed Project Cafe.

Luckily, Rob Lowe from Nintendo UK has reconfirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be hitting our shelves later this year for the Wii, as well as a glimpse of what the future holds for the Wii.

“There are great new pieces of software launching this year such as Wii Play: Motion in June and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword later on in 2011. Plus, there are plenty more surprises in store for 2012 from us – Wii has got a great future ahead of it. We just wanted to make sure that the appeal of Wii is as broad as possible, and the new Mario Kart bundle is designed to be a great value proposition to anyone who is interested in getting a Wii. With this specific campaign, we are targeting families with young kids looking to buy their first games console. This is a very large potential audience, and the new Mario Kart bundle will be the perfect proposition for them.”

Skyward Sword will utilise the Wii MotionPlus accessory for the highest level of accuracy we’ve ever seen in a Legend of Zelda game, making it a brand new gameplay experience. We’re expected to see its release around the end of the year, to mark the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda for the NES.

The 25th anniversary of LoZ by the end of the year that you mention is going by the US release only. The japanese got the game in february… and so while it is possible they release the game on that date is possible, it's not very likely since Nintendo is a Japanese based company, they wouldn't really care about US (or PAL) release dates.

    But who knows?

    • avert_from_the_norm

are you saying that skyward sword was released already in japan (if so it's not exactly obvious)

    • Woop

couldnt they release in japan on the japanese anniversary, and in the us on the us anniversary?

      • mcdude910

Hombre de Mundo was saying that the Japanese anniversary already passed, in February. He said that it could be possible to release SS on the U.S. anniversary, but he doesn't think that the Japanese game designers care enough about the U.S. (compared to their own country), so the game being released near U.S.'s anniversary is unlikely.

    • Zombeh

The 25th anniversary for Japan was in Feb 2011.

The 25th anniversary for the US is Aug 2012.

It's well over a year until the anniversary in America. Not to mention the Japan anniversary has passed, but Nintendo wouldn't try to wait over a year to release a game in different regions.

    • Craig

Japan don't have Skyward Sword… and TLOZ wasn't re-released neither has anything yet been released for Zelda's 25th Anniversary… So, what are you talking about? Also, nobody said anything was US exclusive… You're saying that.

  • Loaf

So it’s not being released on project cafe? /sarcasm

  • Loaf

And they have more planned for the wii so soon to the next console? I wonder if they’re talking about the emotive mind control device.

  • supergiraloz

hmm… Nintendo is gonna do something REALLY big for Skyward sword, i can tell.they've been putting a suspicious amount of attention on a simple remake of OoT, so they're gonna pounce at us with SS or they've got something bigger planned…

    • Moe

As far as I know, the 3DS doesn't yet have a killer app. I think Nintendo is hoping that OoT 3D will be enough to boost 3DS sales, which have been lower than expected. Given that, their focus on the game isn't unreasonable.

Unfortunately, that means we don't have any reason to expect some "bigger plan." But of course, I hope there is one!

  • DoctorYou

I know this isn't technically new info, just a reaffirmation, but I still LOVE hearing it.

  • cloverplayer

dang, I guess no July release? but its ok, as long as they're still working on it and not just putting it off to work on OoT 3D.

    • avert_from_the_norm

OoT 3D is done by now dude, otherwise they wouldn't be releasing it next month! No offense, but at most they are just fine tuning a few small aspects.

    • D.A.

Yeah, OoT3d is finished. Not to mention Grezzo (not Nintendo) did most of the work. I'm sure Nintendo's been focusing on Skyward Sword and their next home console.

  • avert_from_the_norm

I am so thrilled to hear it, though if you were around me right now you might not see it, since i'm preoccupied waiting on something else…anyways, Let's hope for that speculated september release. I know that's a long shot because they want the big christmas time money's, but still, a man can hope and dream can't he…CAN'T HE!!!!!

  • ShadowofLight

Relax, E3 is right around the corner. 🙂

  • Thank God for these news!

I was worried that the Wii would be forgotten and all the attention would be for the Cafe, and that Skyward Sword would be pushed to it, which would have been a shame, in my opinion, because the Wii wouldn't have its own Zelda game (and Link's Crossbow Training doesn't count) .

    Thanks for the post!

  • camron

i was realy hoping the actual release date would be here o_O, oh well :p

  • smokarina of bud

This news has my sword pointing skyward right now. Big time

  • Little_Nino

So ok. Zelda SS for Wii…. are we to say the same game will also be made for the new Nintendo console? Wishing the Wii was HD! 😛

    • I think Nintendo realizes that it would be a shame if there wasn't an exclusive Zelda game for the Wii so I feel they will definitely be making the game for the system and not Project Cafe. Only because SS will probably be released Q4 2011 and Project Cafe will only be revealed sometime in 2012 with the official name and specs. So, Wii still has a somewhat long life ahead of it.

  • reader

Maybe they summed up the aniversary dates from the different regions and took the mean of them…

  • phantombane27

now that we know when its coming out, we have to think about what were gonna recieve(after Oot 3D), namely trailers, content, controls and(my fav) pre-order goodies!!!

  • Josiahinnc

When I saw this I thought That is awesome! but… In 2010 Nintendo UK reconfirmed that it was coming out in 2010 so don't get your hopes up

  • Sparximus

    A) I stopped paying attention to original release dates a long time ago. I don’t believe anything I hear until at least 6-8 weeks out.

    B) regardless of where LOZ was first released, I think the point is that the franchise is still 25 years old.

    C) in light of the 25th anniversary, I think SS should definitely be released on sept. 25 – just to be awesome.
