IGN recently interviewed Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime at the Game Developer’s Conference. Here are some highlights from the interview – more after the jump.

IGN: However, I did, of course, read recent comments from Cammie Dunaway in which she very strongly hinted that we would see the new Wii Zelda unveiled at E3 and released before the end of the year. What’re your thoughts on that?

Reggie: […] A product like Zelda will launch truly when it’s perfect and the best person to answer that question is going to be Mr. Miyamoto. Hopefully, hopefully it’s going to be a title that we can bring to market this year. But it’s not something that we’re going to commit to until we have a much better sense of whether Mr. Miyamoto is going to upend the tea cart and challenge Mr. Aonuma to do new things or whether the development plan is going to stay on track.

IGN:Wii 2 — got to talk about it. I know you hate it. Seems like this will happen at some point, but I want to get a definitive answer because I’ve seen some wishy-washiness. Is the next Wii going to be high-definition or not?

Reggie: […] The way we think about systems — and it’s the beauty of software developers side-by-side with hardware developers — it’s all about when a software developer says, “I’ve got this wonderful idea, but the hardware doesn’t support it.” That’s when we get serious about the next-generation. And we’re not there yet. What that next-generation looks like is going to be dependent on what’s going on at the time. What the consumer is ready for. Who knows? Maybe we’ll leapfrog this HD generation in its entirety because at some point in the future maybe there’s something better going on. All of this is conjecture at this point. The fact of the matter is, when we can’t do a great idea, that’s when we will work on the next platform. And that next platform will be a ‘wow’ for the consumer.

IGN: Can I assume, though, that hardware is constantly being worked on.

Reggie: That is absolutely true.

IGN: I just heard from a development source who said they talked to Nintendo and Nintendo told them it would be ready to roll out the successor to Wii in 2012. Is that true?

Reggie: That is all rumor and speculation.

Ah so they aren't sure if it will be released this year at the E3 summit…still some bugs they have to work out? It must be a difficult thing to handle, whatever they're doing, it's taking all of their time and focus.

It would be nice if we could hear straight from Mr. Miyamoto instead of these guys beating around the bush. "Yes you're gonna see it at the E3 summit" "Maybe, maybe not…." Pfft…

    Double Amen !

  • Ah, Reggie Fils-Aime. You never fail to fail to give any information about anything whatsoever. Us fans just love your utterly non-committal answers.

I hope they wait to release Zelda Wii when its perfect, I would never want a rushed Zelda.

I don't even want to think about a "WII" right now.

I think it would be a mistake not to release it this year.

Not like I care anyway. I sold my Wii last Monday. It was a piece of shit I never used.

I find the stance they're taking on this Zelda very admirable. They're holding back all info until they have something solid and polished to present.

That was the mistake they made with Twilight Princess. Endless delays, an apparent development overhaul and then the final product was nearly nothing like what the earliest trailers promised.

If the next Wii isn't HD I'm simply not buying it. Every game I've ever played on the Wii looks like absolute shit on my plasma and it really ruins the experience.
