10 weapons we want to see Link wield in the Breath of the Wild sequel

by on March 10, 2022

Link has used a wide variety of equipment and items over the years to battle evil, but his arsenal got a huge upgrade in 2017’s Breath of the Wild. The biggest Legend of Zelda game yet offered all kinds of weapons to wield while exploring Hyrule, many of which had never appeared in the series before. Between swords, spears, pikes, axes, scimitars, clubs, elemental blades, boomerangs, and too many types of bows to count, Link had his own personal armory at the ready.

The Breath of the Wild sequel is sure to bring plenty of new weapons into the mix. When we finally get to experience the next great adventure in the Era of the Wilds, these are 10 weapons that we hope to see Link be able to wield.

10. Staff

Something just feels right about the image of Link wielding a staff as his weapon of choice, swinging and twirling the long rod about in a deft display. A staff comes across as an elegant weapon, one to be handled with grace and poise. It requires the utmost dexterity and precision to wield one without making a buffoon of oneself. Link exemplifies all of these qualities. It also feels like a suitable weapon for a humble, noble hero who may at times prefer to strike down an enemy without delivering a lethal blow.

9. Dual swords

It’s about time that dual-wielding made its way into The Legend of Zelda. For a moment, picture Link weaving and slashing his way through a horde of foes with a sword in each hand. He would look every bit the part of a Gerudo warrior or, for an example beyond The Legend of Zelda, the Forgotten Realms’ most famous Dark Elf, Drizzt Do’Urden. Having Link carry two swords at once kicks the offense up a notch, and it also opens up the possibility to mix and match different blades. A Flameblade/Iceblade pairing, or a Thunderblade/Guardian Sword pairing sound like combinations that are too spectacular to miss out on.

8. Boleadora

A boleadora would be a very versatile weapon for Link. When thrown, the set of metal spheres would either strike an enemy and knock them loopy, or it could wrap about their bodies and immobilize them. In a more simple but plenty effective approach, Link could just swing the boleadora like a ball and chain to smash some hapless foe square in the noggin.

7. Kanabo

If a new two-handed weapon should debut in the Breath of the Wild sequel, the kanabo is the best candidate. This huge, spiked club of Japanese origin is a fearsome-looking piece of work, ideal for crushing and tearing into whatever it strikes. It’s precisely why demonic oni are frequently depicted wielding them in artwork. The Sheikah might be a tribe of lithe ninjas, but the kanabo would be a perfect addition to their arsenal as the designated smashing weapon. A few whacks from this could fell even the biggest Hinox in Hyrule.

6. Jousting lance

Remember how much fun the duel against King Bulblin atop the Bridge of Eldin was in Twilight Princess? The Breath of the Wild sequel needs to let us recreate that jousting match anywhere, anytime across Hyrule. The original game let us use a spear while riding a horse for the first time in the series, but a jousting lance is a far longer weapon that would allow Link to strike his enemy well before he or his horse were within their reach. Once his mount started charging at full speed, anything that Link struck with a jousting lance would be flattened in short order.

5. Shuriken

The only thing missing for a Stealth Set-clad Link to feel like a true shinobi is a set of shuriken to throw from the shadows. They are lighter and more compact than bows, making them the ideal throwing weapon for stealth operations when Link must go unnoticed by his enemies. Another benefit to shuriken is that they only require one hand to be used, so if his cover is blown, Link could hurl a few even when he’s fending off enemies at close range with most one-handed weapons.

4. Twin hooks

The twin hooks would provide the same kind of fluid, fast-paced offense as the aforementioned dual swords, along with a few nifty uses. When not slicing or stabbing, twin hooks would be effective for grabbing onto a foe’s weapon and yanking it out of their grasp to disarm them. Outside of combat, Link could also use them to swing between trees like Jet from Avatar: The Last Airbender, or to get a more secure purchase when climbing — especially during rain.

3. Sword whip (urumi)

The whip has already appeared as an item in previous Legend of Zelda games, and now we need to wield one that can do some serious damage. Something like the Vampire Killer as seen in the Castlevania series would be a lot of fun to use, but we’re thinking more along the lines of the urumi from India. Adding that extra bit of range would make Link an even more formidable swordsman than he already is. When twirling an urumi about, very few enemies would be able to penetrate Link’s defenses without being cut to ribbons.

2. Chakram

Chakram come in many different sizes, opening up all kinds of possibilities for combat. Link can easily use the bigger designs for hand-to-hand combat like the dual swords or twin hooks, but that’s just the start of what he can do with the chakram. When forged into smaller sizes, chakram make for deadly throwing weapons, which historically was their primary use in battle. Some chakram are fashioned so small that they can be worn over your wrists or even your fingers, like a pair of brass knuckles that slice and dice instead of knocking you senseless.

1. Scythe

The sight of Link holding a scythe would definitely take some getting used to, but one way or another it would be a wicked addition to his arsenal. At the very least, it would pair well with the ghostly Fierce Deity outfit. Link would feel like the Angel of Death as he cut a swath through crowds of foes with the looping slashes of a scythe. On a less lethal and more practical note, there is no weapon better suited to cutting down all of that tall grass to find rupees or other items.
