Animator RwanLink has resurrected one of the most memorable locations in the Zelda franchise – The Gerudo Fortress – in an Unreal Engine 5 animation so polished it almost demands you to start a new playthrough of Ocarina of Time.
The short animation blends gorgeous anime-inspired character work with a meticulously rebuilt environment. The result is a cinematic reinterpretation that evokes the memories of the N64 original while feeling fresh.
One of the standout scenes comes early, as the camera glides over the fortress. The desert wind kicks up embers of sand, lanterns sway gently in the heat, and the Gerudo guards patrol with a confidence that instantly sells their warrior culture. It’s a small moment, but it’s the kind of atmospheric world-building the original game implied. As the animation continues, you’ll see the fights you always imagined having that just couldn’t happen before with the Nintendo 64’s limitations.
There is definitely some Wild Era inspiration put into the animation, like the added open outdoor shops and children playing as they run through the streets, but the additions never take you out of the Ocarina of Time mindset. The archery training is shown, the flag posts still present a guide through the Haunted Wasteland, and by some curious miracle even the carpenters found a way to get locked back up. RwanLink built upon the original fortress entirely from scratch without removing or changing any of its original magic.
According to RwanLink, the entire project took roughly three months to complete, with a full month dedicated just to animation work. That level of labor shows in every frame. From the fluid movement of the guards to the sweeping cinematic shots that frame the fortress like a character in its own right, this is fan passion elevated into art.
Beyond the technical achievement, what makes this animation resonate is its emotional fidelity. It doesn’t try to change Ocarina of Time, it pays homage to what was originally created. It amplifies the sense of mystery, danger, and cultural richness that made Gerudo Fortress unforgettable in the first place.
