When looking back on my youth, I often find myself reflecting on how certain events or objects can take me back to certain specific gaming memories, despite the fact that those events or objects may not necessarily be related.
I had finally fought my way to Gerudo Valley and begun my infiltration of the Gerudo Fortress while playing Ocarina of Time in my youth. I had to find all four of the carpenters to progress, but I recall being stuck for what seemed like an hour trying to find the proper pathway to the final carpenter. Being constantly captured by the Gerudo guards didn’t help matters either.

While I was going through this ordeal, I remember my father bringing me dinner during a family barbeque that was taking place. And there it was: my first ever burger. I was a picky eater as a child, so at the time, if the food wasn’t something I knew I liked or some form of chicken nugget, I didn’t touch it. But something just compelled me to try it for the first time. Maybe it was my frustration at getting thrown out of the fortress for the 400th time, I’m not sure.
But when I took that first bite, it was absolutely heavenly. And ever since then, I haven’t been able to play through the Gerudo Fortress portion of Ocarina of Time without thinking about my very first burger.
