Bombers’ Notebook: Gengle

The Castle Town of Twilight Princess is one of the most busy places in the world of Hyrule. Absolutely filled to the brim with people and animals alike, theres a lot to do for both Human and Wolf Link in Hyrule’s capital. In one of the many corners of Castle Town, an unfortunate soul named Jovani rests completely unable to move as his body and surroundings have turned entirely to gold. You can read more about Jovani himself some other time because, today, we’re going to be talking about the adorable head ornament this gold statue of a man boasts: the cat Gengle.

Gengle’s owner, Jovani, made a deal with the Poes to become rich in exchange for his soul. The Poes turned him and all his belongings to gold, including his cat Gengle who was resting on his head. Jovani pleads with Link to recover the Poe souls and help him regain his body, which will also cure Gengle of his golden curse as well. Getting 20 out of the total 100 souls for Jovani will revive Gengle, but you’ll have to collect many more to cure Jovani himself. As it turns out, Gengle is actually no ordinary cat. Switching to Wolf Link and speaking to the cat’s outside reveal that he’s actually the boss of the gang of cats that hangs out outside Jovani’s house. They refer to him as “Boss Gengle” and talk about how he’s been missing from important meetings.

Once you collect enough souls to fully cure his Master, Gengle will thank you for freeing them both of the curse. Later on, you can find Jovani lamenting that his girlfriend has left him in the time he was gone, and spends the rest of his time wallowing in pain at Telma’s Tavern. If you go back to Gengle after meeting with Jovani at the Tavern, you’ll unlock an unlimited source of money! Gengle provides the player with a hefty 200 Rupees every time they visit Castle Town and stop by to talk to him. At this point in the game, unfortunately, money is hardly an obstacle for Link so the infinite resource is not as strong as it sounds, though it does end up being a very useful source of money for a player intending to use the Rupee draining Magic Armor!

Gengle isn’t the only cat in Castle Town with a more complex personality, there’s several other animals with their own story to tell. Exploring Castle Town and discovering all the secret stories of the city was one of my favorite parts of Twilight Princess, and I know for a fact I was not the only one charmed by the adorable cats of Castle Town. I never did end up finding enough souls to get unlimited money from Gengle during my first playthrough of Twilight Princess, but hopefully on my next play I’ll be able to get the cat gang their boss back and cash in on his massive Rupee stash.
