Medli’s Melodies: Serving revenge to the Helmaroc King

Throughout all of the various Links’ journeys, there’s one fight that stands out to me as the most personal. The Helmaroc King serves as the Hero of Winds’ final obstacle before meeting Ganondorf at the top of the Forsaken Fortress, but it is also the entire reason he left his home island for this grand adventure. Link’s initial goal is to rescue his sister, Aryll, who was kidnapped by the giant bird. He’s able to free her before the monster becomes an active threat, but chooses to challenge it anyway. While defeating the Helmaroc King means the residents of the Great Sea don’t have to live in fear of being snatched up anymore, I like to imagine the hero’s biggest motivator in this moment is revenge. And, as Zelda music always does, this battle theme fits the scenario perfectly.

I chose this version of the song because I prefer its instrumentation, but both are great!

The song kicks off right away, with an airy violin melody countered by light brass lines. The backing instruments include a marching snare drum, some low strings to provide intense chords, and a vibraphone for some unique color. This back-and-forth goes on for a while, until 0:31 when a new motif presents itself, as bold as the hero and as fierce as the Helmaroc King himself. The next section raises the stakes by adding a deep timpani to the mix, giving the track a more powerful rhythm. The violin flourishes here remind me of the bird’s signature spinning ascent, fearsome despite its elegance. As the track approaches its loop point, the dynamics rise and the chords become more dissonant.

At first, the Helmaroc King wears a thick helmet, which means the only effective weapon is the slow and heavy Skull Hammer. Once its head is exposed in the final phase, the hero is able to hit the beast with practically anything, and this makes the battle much faster-paced. The music, of course, reflects this by adding countless small details throughout the track’s second half (starting at 1:07). The main melody is doubled with a flute, the percussion is enhanced with claps and cymbal crashes, and a much fuller brass section is introduced. All of these little things help increase the magnitude of the boss fight, building up to one of the greatest victory cutscenes in the series.

Link’s second visit to the Forsaken Fortress is one of my favorite sections of The Wind Waker. It’s incredibly satisfying to sail up to Ganondorf’s front door and storm the place, especially since the first time there was just a stealth mission. Freeing Aryll from the clutches of evil is such an important moment, and the ability to bonk the Helmaroc King’s tiny head with a massive hammer is the cherry on top. And this stellar boss theme is the cherry on top of that cherry.
