Here I am, once again wishing that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity had a freeplay mode. Or a photo mode. Or both!
Hyrule Castle Town draws me back again and again, and it’s frustrating to have to replay timed battles in order to explore it in more depth. So much of it is out of bounds, too; I just want to poke around like I did in Ocarina of Time and see the day-to-day lives of the people living there.
I want to know about all the buildings — their purposes, their interiors, and who uses them. And one in particular keeps catching my eye. I can’t be 100% certain of this building’s purpose, but I am pretty confident that this is the Hyrule Castle Town Barracks.

This location features in a few scenarios throughout Age of Calamity, and it’s often an area that needs to be protected or reclaimed from an enemy. Compared to the other houses and buildings around the area, this place is massive. Well-built as it is, it’s not grand or opulent like Hyrule Castle, nor is it as striking as Impa’s house in Kakariko Village. It is too large for a single family home, but there is a homeliness to it.
While we can’t look inside, based on the number of windows, it seems to have many rooms. Would these be dormitories? Are there classrooms in there? Or have I gotten it wrong entirely? I swear I picked it up from somewhere that this is the barracks, though I don’t have a citation for that. It is one of the few buildings in the town with any fortification, with a tall stone wall surrounding it.

Seeing the soldiers defending their positions here, it’s easy to picture this as a practice yard for drills (though I’m sure they did plenty more within the castle walls).

Of course, I might be totally wrong about this. Maybe this isn’t a military building at all. It could be a hotel, a school, or something else entirely. I’ll leave it up to you to decide.
