Toronbo Shores is a location you will visit quite frequently in Link’s Awakening. You’ll do many things here like shipwrecking, sword searching, even trading dog food for bananas: basically everything other than what you probably want to do at the beach. It would seem most residents of Koholint are not too fond of the beach, maybe because of all the Octoroks or that sketchy-lookin’ alligator with a hat. But one resident, Marin, seems to visit Toronbo Shores almost as frequently as Link. For Link, Toronbo Shores may be just another required location to visit from time to time, but for Marin, this is the edge of her reality.

We all know the tragic ending of Link’s Awakening. The entirety of Koholint is merely inside the dream of the Wind Fish, and the only way to get out of the dream is to complete the game and wake the Wind Fish. However, waking the Wind Fish would mean the end of Koholint Island and its inhabitants. The truth is, nothing on the island is real; the monsters, animals, even the people only exist inside the deity’s dream.
This fate is hinted at throughout the game, like how Joonya and Suhni seem to be incapable of recalling the origins of this island they call home. It would appear that most of the residents are not even able to fathom the idea of a world outside of Koholint. All except Marin. Instead, we find Marin constantly at the beach, gazing out to sea, wishing, nay– knowing that there is more to her world than just Koholint.
What is even more tragic is the arrival of Link, shipwrecking on Toronbo Shores. By Link crashing here, it was indeed her confirmation that there is more to this world than just the island. Her feelings are all wrapped up beautifully in that iconic cutscene on Toronbo Shores. You know the one; where she and Link sit and look out towards the horizon, and Marin opens up about what she is always doing down here on the beach.
She expresses her desire to finally leave Koholint and see the rest of the world. Maybe she can go on an adventure with Link as he continues sailing on beyond Koholint. But of course, we know this is not possible. Koholint Island only exists in this illusory realm. Toronbo Shores is the furthest she can ever go. The sands of Toronbo Shores act as a glass ceiling for Marin, she can forever look out to the open horizon, but she can never actually cross it.

I think it is interesting how Link’s Awakening utilizes this image of Toronbo Shores. Looking out at the vast ocean beyond the shore, at an endless horizon would make it seem as though the possibilities outside of Koholint are limitless. Ironically, Toronbo Shores is the limit, and this vastness is actually emptiness.
