It’s been far too long since we last checked in with Terry Garrett. If you recognize that name, you will likely recall him as the blind man who stunned us all by demonstrating how he can play Ocarina of Time using audio alone way back in 2011. Never one to rest on his laurels, the popular video became a full-on Let’s Play series in which he continued his journey through the game over the years, even overcoming the latter parts of the game that he lacked experience with using the invaluable feedback, videos, and resources provided by his faithful community. He finally conquered the game in 2016, and that’s the last time we reported on Terry’s efforts — but that’s not to say he hasn’t been busy since then.
He would then go on to practice for his next big gaming challenge, which he unveiled his first episode for in 2019: Majora’s Mask. Being Ocarina of Time’s sequel and utilizing many of the same in-game assets of its predecessor, much of the sound design was familiar to Terry, and learning to control the same Link came naturally to him, so it seemed like a perfect project for him to undertake. Of course, Terry was still very much stepping into the unknown as he made his way into the land of Termina, and watching him overcome some of the game’s biggest obstacles has been nothing less than jaw-dropping.
Recently, Terry conquered the Great Bay Temple, the third of four main dungeons in the game. Being the overachiever that he is, along the way he is also taking on the game’s many sidequests and pursuing the many upgrades that the game has to offer. Before he confronts the Stone Tower Temple, his latest hour-long episode sees him complete all the necessary steps to assemble the Frog Choir and acquire the Gilded Sword.

If you’re entirely new to Terry’s content in general, you may be wondering just how it’s even possible for a blind person to play through a Zelda game. In that case, it’s highly recommended that you start with the first episode in Terry’s original Ocarina of Time playthrough (below), in which he walks us through his elaborate audio setup, his trial-and-error approach using emulator save states, and how he uses all of the game’s different audio cues to progress. Truly, it’s essential viewing for Zelda fans, if only for a chance to appreciate just how exceptional Ocarina’s (and by extension, Majora’s) sound design really is.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, Terry has also recently started a new playthrough of Ocarina of Time, which he streams on Twitch and uploads to his channel. Besides Zelda, you can also catch Terry playing Minecraft, Portal, Shades of Doom, Oddworld, Guitar Hero, and Bit.Trip Runner.
A decade on, and we’re still rooting for you, Terry!
