Dungeons are arguably the most important and consistent element of the Zelda formula. From the early days of the original game on the Nintendo Entertainment System to the most recent entry on the Nintendo Switch, Zelda labyrinths offer a unique combination of puzzle-solving, combat, and level design. While certain dungeons are more enjoyable than others, the best Zelda dungeons are immersive experiences that fuse natural environments with unforgettable soundtracks and ambiance.
Perhaps the best example of this phenomenon is Snowpeak Ruins in Twilight Princess. Although the dungeon theme is already one of my favorite soundtracks in the series, a gifted composer by the name of RebeccaETripp created a special orchestral remix of the “Snowpeak Ruins” theme. Rebecca’s interpretation not only expounds upon the original focus of environmental components but also elicits powerful responses of curiosity and dread.
Set in a hillside of a snow-covered ravine, Snowpeak Ruins is the eerie home of the Yeti couple Yeto and Yeta. With its antiquated sense of mystery and trepidation, the entire mansion feels like a mirror image of the castle from the Walt Disney film Beauty and the Beast. This is the backdrop that Rebecca accentuates in her rendition of the “Snowpeak Ruins” theme.
RebeccaETripp immediately establishes a whimsical sense of cautious curiosity with her choice of instruments. The introduction is showcased by light percussion, which sounds like a combination of the triangle and the marimba. This choice establishes an icicle-like mood of a cold and drafty interior. In addition, these instruments also create a feeling of quiet hesitancy as the listener watches Link tiptoe around the giant mansion.
As the introduction transitions into the first verse, Rebecca adds several stringed and wind instruments; however, instead of employing traditional sustains, Rebecca expounds upon the percussion by using a staccato technique. As a result, every instrument amplifies the feeling of Link softly lurking about the Yeti’s manor as he searches for the third Mirror Shard.
As with various discoveries and sections of the Twilight Princess dungeon, Rebecca’s composition crescendos at precise moments of excitement and slows down at others to emphasize periods of tranquil pause. The feelings that Rebecca creates are unapologetically nostalgic and reminiscent of Link’s interactions with Yeto and Yeta. Overall, the arrangement gave me a greater appreciation for the atmosphere and level design of Snowpeak Ruins, and it is one of my favorite Zelda pieces that I have stumbled across on the internet.
