The internet is a strange, strange place. There are videos being made every second of the most random scenarios, looping for ten hours straight with the most ridiculously catchy foreign songs, all just because we thought it would be funny for a week or so. I’m not going to “meme-splain” to you as you likely already know exactly what a meme is — I mean, you’re on the internet so I assume you do. They’re unavoidable, like a plague with silly catchphrases slapped on them in impact font.
That being said, Nintendo has had a variety of its characters featured in rather famous or long-lasting memes: Bowsette, “Do a barrel roll!”, Yoshi committing tax fraud, and just about everything that came from the CD-i games, to name a few. My favorite, however, feels like a long-forgotten relic of the past — but Nintendo didn’t forget. Nintendo never forgets.
Upon completing Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s Classic Mode as our favorite child hero, I could not help but crack up at a recreation of one of my favorite silly memes. It’s simply a video of Thomas the Tank Engine chasing Link as he runs away in a very silly fashion to the theme song of the titular train, but for some reason that gets me rolling every time. Apparently, someone on the Smash Bros. team is also a fan, as Link appears to be in almost the very same position as he runs from the Spirit Tracks train as he is from Thomas in the video.

I checked the rest of the images to see if there were any other silly meme references, and while there were recognitions of online discussions (such as finally adding Chrom to the roster as he was passed over in Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U), nothing else is as outright shameless as this meme impersonator. Still, it’s fun to know that Nintendo is “hip and with it,” am I right, fellow youngsters?
