I’ve mentioned this in a previous article, but I have a soft spot for art projects made out of clay. The malleable medium is too much fun to work with. There’s nothing you can’t bring to 3D life with it. So when Sculpted Nostalgia, the artist behind the Valoo sculpture I covered in said previous article, contacted Zelda Universe to tell us about this latest creation, I knew what I needed to do.
This time around, Sculpted Nostalgia has drifted away from the cartoony style choice of The Wind Waker to explore the also charming aesthetics of Majora’s Mask. There’s a sort of dreamscape appeal to Majora’s Mask. It’s an appeal brought to life by the characters and locations, and it’s made vivid by the N64 limited technical capabilities, ironic as that might sound.
Capturing the subject’s essence
For those of us who remember the first time we saw the Giant Turtle rise out of the waters of Termina’s Great Bay, we understand and remember precisely what that sensation is. It’s shock and charm mixed together. This was a common feeling to experience while playing the game. It’s what every aspect of it seemed to emit.
Even the Giant Turtle exuded this nearly undefinable quality. That’s why it was important that Sculpted Nostalgia get this model exactly right. Accuracy of design meant capturing the “feeling” of Majora’s Mask. This would decide if this sculpture was worthy of attention from the fans.
The details make a shell of a difference
It’s a good thing Sculpted Nostalgia was up to the challenge. This sculpture is a faithful recreation of Link’s shelled friend. Every detail is present, even the ones that 64 bits couldn’t render all that well. That’s one of the best aspects of this piece. With this being real-life art and it being made decades after the game’s release, much of the visual aspects of the sculpture are much more defined than the source material.
But no aspect deviates from the original’s artistic style. Sculpted Nostalgia may have also taken some inspiration from the Giant Turtle’s appearances in the Majora’s Mask: 3D remake or from the Super Smash Bros. games, but to capture the essence of any project, an artist needs to have a complete understanding of the initial inspiration. I believe Sculpted Nostalgia makes that point by showing footage from the original Majora’s Mask at the start of their YouTube video.
One final note I have to make is about the paint job. It’s what does the most work to make me a fan of this piece. Every shade of green, brown, and off-white is perfect. And the distribution of colors, like how the green of the turtle’s flippers fade and mix into the white, give the sculpture that essential splash of accuracy. No shortcuts were taken with the application.
This was an incredible tribute to the Zelda series. It’s wonderful when someone who is enthusiastic about something uses that enthusiasm as a chance to share their talents with the world. We all love to see it. We love when other people feel the same as we do about a game other such creation. Much like how the Giant Turtle carries Link to his next victory, the shared passion leads us to an invaluable sense of community.
