Realm of Memories: Yeto’s Superb Soup

Autumn is by far my favorite season. The sun starts to set earlier and earlier as the colors in the trees change to a beautiful burning orange. As we approach the shortest and darkest days of the year, we replace crisp Summer evenings with cozy nights spent around bright fires, snuggled in thick woolly blankets and the comfort of heart-warming food.

I don’t know why, but there seems to be a pulling magic when it comes to food depicted in movies, television series and video games. For me, there is just something so satisfying about crafting delicious meals in a digital space. If I could reach into my screen and pull food and beverages out from my favorite fictional worlds, I would happily dive face first into the screen without hesitation but alas, someone is yet to invent Wonkavision.

Before Link adorned his apron and sat around the cooking pot in Breath of the Wild, there was a certain dish from Twilight Princess that always tantalized my taste buds whenever I found myself at the top of Snowpeak Ruins: Yeto’s Superb Soup.

Yeto’s Soup is notoriously recognized for three main ingredients: Reekfish heads, Ordon Pumpkin, and Ordon Goat Cheese. The nutritious broth heals a certain amount of health that corresponds to the ingredients as they are thrown in. Each stage of the soup heals twice as many hearts as the last and, with the help of Link as the assistant chef, Yeto is lovingly making the soup to heal his sick wife, Yeta.

The Geeky Chef Cookbook: Real-Life Recipes for Fantasy Foods is a collection of nerdy recipes by Cassandra Reeder and was the first step towards my personal cooking dream of creating mouth-watering dishes from my favorite video game universe. As a lifetime geek and an avid lover of all things fish and cheese, I could not wait to try out Yeto’s Superb Soup.

I ended up substituting seasonal pumpkin for sweet potato and (thankfully) the fictional Reekfish heads for salmon fillets, but the dish was a perfect creamy combination filled with full flavors and a silky consistency.

After two overfilled bowls and half a buttered baguette, I have to say that it is no wonder why Yeta felt so much better after eating her husband’s comforting dish. As a global language that connects the planet, food tends to bring positive closeness among people. By infusing your food with the best thoughts of love and care for the ones you’re cooking for, it certainly can replenish one’s heart.
