YouTubers HMK and NintendoBlackCrisis collaborated on a new video that attempts to explain what happened to the mysterious Zonai tribe in Breath of the Wild. While the Zonai have been the source of much speculation in recent theories surrounding the sequel to Breath of the Wild, only hints of their existence remain for players to discover throughout Hyrule.
While it says in the book Creating a Champion that the Zonai were rumored to be a “savage tribe,” HMK and NintendoBlackCrisis believe that the Zonai were actually much more advanced than these rumors suggest, as the book also states that the Zonai were strong magic wielders. The Zonai’s architectural skill would also suggest that they were much more than just savages. These structures include the ruins in the Faron region, the giant animal statues, the three labyrinths, Thyphlo Ruins, and the Thunder Plateau.

Instead of savages, HMK and NintendoBlackCrisis believe that the Zonai were lore keepers that recorded an impartial and unbiased record of history. As a result, the Zonai would also record the dark and shameful parts of the royal family’s past — something they couldn’t let happen. This lead to the Zonai being forced underground and eventually eliminated by the Sheikah as ordered by the royal family.
The theorists believe that the Zonai were unbiased lorekeepers by the clues left behind throughout Hyrule and by the wall mural shown of Ganondorf in the sequel trailer. The theorists even go as far to suggest that the Zonai have purposefully been preserving Ganondorf’s body underground, keeping him alive as he is the only one left who knows the truth of the past.
