The Zelda series has seen its fair share of mini-games. Whether it be the Shooting Gallery or the Treasure Chest game, the series has always included a variety to choose from. However, there is one mini-game that most people despise with a burning passion. Of course, I’m talking about the infamous Squid-Hunt from The Wind Waker.

This minigame is essentially a game of Battleship. Instead of ships, you are must pursue three squids hidden across an 8×8 grid. Squid-Hunt is filled with RNG, meaning that the game changes constantly. This is a nightmare for those wanting to reach 100% completion and an even greater nuisance for speed-runners. To fully complete The Wind Waker, the player must gather all of the Treasure Charts and Pieces of Heart, and it just so happens that this minigame rewards you with both of those things.
Speedrunner Linkus7, who is famously known for his runs of The Wind Waker, recently uploaded a video solving the annoying minigame. This was made possible through the efforts of members of the community, with Linkus putting the spotlight on Peter Schmidt-Nielsen.
In the video’s description, Linkus said, ”This video would have not been possible without Peter Schmidt-Nielsen. All the animations in this video were created by Peter in Javascript using d3, so huge shout out to him for putting in such great work!”
This hard work has resulted in a “Sploosh Kaboom Probability Calculator” which was uploaded to GitHub. This tool uses the game’s code to examine the board generation algorithms, this allows us to determine every random number that the algorithm generates. For speedrunners, this will save a lot of time during the 100% category.
