Yuga’s Art Gallery: Impa cosplay

I’ve never been much for cosplay, but I cannot dismiss the talent put on display through these creative outfits. And sometimes, the skill catches me by surprise. That’s why I’m compelled to share this amazing depiction of Impa from Hyrule Warriors.

Also, to ignore this cosplay would be to disregard Impa. And even if she’s not a real person, I’m not bold enough to disrespect her like that.

I’ve always seen Impa’s design from Hyrule Warriors as a blend between her depictions in Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword, and that mix worked wonders to convey her agility, composure, and lethality. Cosplayer Rei-Suzuki’s wonderful cosplay of this version of Impa brings all of these traits to life, and I am understandably impressed.

Rei-Suzuki’s ability to depict the character, not solely in appearance but also in attitude, helps sell the entire presentation. That look on her face is just so “Impa.” She’ll ordinarily leave everyone in peace, and has a kind and serving heart, but those eyes tell you that she is also ready to leave any threat in pieces. And if her intensity doesn’t make her stance clear, then her hard-to-miss naginata is there and ready to spell things out for you.

Once I got past the unexpectedly intriguing intimidation factor, I found myself marveling at all the details in the costume. Rei-Suzuki did an amazing job bringing the design from polygons to patterns and from code to cloth. I’ve written about it before, but the extra effort an artist or crafts person puts into their work is often what makes all the difference. Here, the designs and patterns are convincing and look real, and the colors — with the principle mix of light blue, fiery red, and gold and silver accents — make her stand out. Add to those that appropriate ashen hair and face paint, and the look is complete.

This cosplay, paired also with the perfectly-chosen backgrounds and lighting effects, delivers a true sense of art and showmanship, which is something I always look for and appreciate in fan-made projects. If you enjoy cosplay, I strongly suggest you check out what else Rei-Suzuki (you can also find her on Instagram) has to offer.
