That Chain Chomp in Link’s Awakening’s Trendy Game is a collectible figure

Ever since last month’s discovery of a Chain Chomp in the refurbished Trendy Game of the Link’s Awakening remake, I have been obsessed with finding out more. Why is this new prize here when it wasn’t in the original, and what role will it play in the remake?

To recap: In the upcoming Link’s Awakening remake, it seems that after Link wins the Yoshi Doll in the Trendy Game and then re-enters the shop, it is replaced by what looks like a small Chain Chomp. However, the previous footage cut off as soon as we saw it, so we didn’t know what would happen if Link grabbed it with the claw — until now!

With our resident funnyman Elias Thompson attending San Diego Comic-Con to play the Link’s Awakening demo this week, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give him a little assignment: find out what the deal is with this new (or at least, newly placed) Chomp.

The answer is that it’s not a Chain Chomp at all, or at least, not a living one. It’s a collectible figure.

Upon claiming the prize, the text reads, “You got a CiaoCiao figure! There must be somewhere you can display it…” The description of the figure reads, “It’s a CiaoCiao figure. Like the real thing, it requires a lot of love and a lot of patience.”

It’s also not YipYip, as previously speculated. It now seems more likely than ever that the name “YipYip” will not be used in the remake, as this character seems to have been renamed as “CiaoCiao” (based on the dialogue window of the character in Madam MeowMeow’s doghouse, as well as the figure being called the “CiaoCiao figure” while featuring YipYip’s ribbon).

Once you claim the figure as your prize, you can then display it on a pedestal on the table of Madam MeowMeow’s house. It appears as though figures will play a part in a brand new sidequest in the remake!
