Switch NES controllers only compatible with NES titles, unusable attached to console

It seems that anyone hoping to get their hands on the set of beautifully retro Nintendo Switch-compatible NES controllers, first introduced during the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation, may want to read the fine print before pre-purchasing. New compatibility information has surfaced which some players may find disappointing.

According to Nintendo, the NES controllers are only compatible with games in the Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online application and will not work with any additional titles. The controllers, which attach to the system for charging, also won’t work when attached to the system — meaning you won’t be able to use them as retro-inspired Joy-Con while playing in handheld mode.

The Nintendo Switch Online NES Controllers will be available for pre-purchase beginning tomorrow, September 18, exclusively for current paid Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and are expected to release in mid-December.
