Realm of Memories: The Infamous Mellie and Her Plum Garden

Mellie is a strange character I had first come across while wandering around Kakariko Village in Breath of the Wild. I was collecting wood when a few bundles of it had fallen into her plum garden. I tried to jump into her garden to collect the wood, but Mellie immediately kicked me out of the garden. She didn’t want me to mess with her plum trees. She told me that they were planted by Impa on the day she was born and keeps watch over them.

Celebration of the Wild is a month-long celebration of the anniversary of this beloved game. All month long we will be picking our favorite songs, fan works, places, memories, and more of this wonderful addition to the Zelda series. Breath of the Wild has revolutionized the franchise all for the better and it’s only suiting we take this month to celebrate its achievements.

Annoyed that I couldn’t collect the wood, I tried to think of some way to get into the garden. After some thought, I came to the conclusion that if I destroyed Mellie’s trees, then she would have no reason to yell at me. If she still stopped me, at least destroying her trees would feel cathartic since I was annoyed about being unable to collect my wood.

I quickly got to work and began throwing bombs into Mellie’s garden. Each time I blew up her trees she would yell at me, but I had to continue, I wanted that wood and was not willing to let the game win. By the time I finished bombing her trees, something amazing happened. She realized her trees were gone. I did not expect her to react this way. Eventually she came to the conclusion that her life’s purpose was gone, but unfortunately, that’s what you get for coming between me and my bundles of wood.

Despite destroying all of Mellie’s plum trees, she still would not let me jump into the garden. At this point, I knew that as long as she was standing next to the garden, she would always stop me from jumping into it, barren or not. After thinking about the situation, I decided to make a campfire and wait until the night. When night came, she left the desolate garden and I was able to pick up my wood. I realize that I could’ve tried waiting until night first, but it was worth it seeing Mellie’s reaction to her destroyed garden. I really had no idea that I was capable of such a mean act, but Breath of the Wild has a way of turning us all into monsters.
