Saying goodbye is never easy. As of writing this, Miiverse, Nintendo’s attempt to create a social media site for their dedicated platforms, has officially left us. While it may not have ever reached its full potential during its five-year lifespan, it offered some interesting features and was a source of entertainment, to say the least. Not only did the service serve as an outlet for those enjoying games on both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, but also for developers as a means of sharing new information, or friendly messages.

Personally, I immensely enjoyed gathering Tingle bottles when roaming around the Great Sea in The Wind Waker HD and felt that it added just a little something to the game in the absence of Game Boy Advance connectivity. While it was never a game-selling feature, the small perks of its integration were always charming. Whether it was the stamps available to collect in games like Twilight Princess HD, or the tournament mode and themed stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, it enriched the games it touched just that much more.

YouTube user Christian Hendrickson has made a fittingly delightful tribute to the service, highlighting some of the best posts and featuring the sounds of Miiverse as a heartstring-tugging accompaniment.

Despite that it was never an integral feature of games on the Wii U, Miiverse did serve as a major point of the Wii U hardware. The discontinuation not only marks the end of an era, it highlights Nintendo’s intent to move on quickly from their former home platform. As the discontinuation of the service now removes online posts from the Wii U’s WaraWara Plaza menu, the system truly seems a lifeless husk by comparison.

As we look to the future of Nintendo’s offerings, and where Nintendo Switch will take us in the future, we should not forget the fallen friends of our past. Fare-thee-well Miiverse, we hardly knew ye. If you’re curious how this closure will affect your Wii U experiences going forward, please be sure to watch GameXplain’s helpful video below.
