The Nintendo Wi-Fi service, which provides online functionality for certain Wii, DS, and DSi software titles, will be terminated May 20, 2014. This includes Wii mode on Wii U and Nintendo DS games played on Nintendo 3DS family systems. There is a silver lining here, as the Wii Shop Channel, Nintendo DSi Shop, and video-on-demand services (i.e. Netflix) are not affected at this time. Also, to be clear, the Wii U and 3DS are NOT affected. A press release from Nintendo provides a complete list of affected titles, and you can also view the complete list after the jump.

This made the Wii disk slot light up. When was the last time the Wii lit up for an update?

I’m actually really pissed about SSBB…
they didn’t know there’s tons of brawl tournaments and if they didn’t know “All is Brawl” they will actually forget about terminating SSBB’s Online service…

  • John

I guess they are forcing our hand on a Wii U, but Brawl was a mistake. There are that many people still playing Goldeneye for it not to be on the list?

  • The Doctor

Does this mean the Wii Shop Channel won’t have games available for download anymore?

    • ZeldaMaster

Wii Shop is safe. Don’t worry.

      • The Doctor

Are you sure? I really hope so.

  • Joseph Barrentine

maybe this means SSB4 comes out May 20th?

    • The Doctor

Hopefully Nintendo will fix the wifi in the SSB series. They did great with Mario Kart Wii, but SSBB had way too much lag.

  • Matt Rayfield

This is not a really suprising thing. Nintendo is trying to get people to better understand that the Wii U is not an Add on for the Wii system. I did most of my playing with people here around my home. I rarely used SSBB’s online service and did not do much of it for Mario Kart DS or Mario Kart Wii. So this has no affect on me.

What does this mean for GoldenEye 007? Will it still be playable online?

  • CEObrainz

I guess they are making way for Smash 4 and Mario Kart 8, but I’ll miss playing the older games every once in a while. Thankfully I can still play Goldeneye without too much trouble.
