Link vs. Dark Link in Ocarina of Time 3D

Ah, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time‘s infamous Water Temple. Raising and lowering water levels, constantly putting on and taking off the Iron Boots, and that pesky Dark Link battle (good thing we always have Din’s Fire!). Many Legend of Zelda fans rank the Water Temple as their least favourite temple out of any of the games in the series.

Fans have been wondering if The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is going to keep the same challenge the Nintendo 64 version of the game offered, or if it’s going to be made slightly less frustrating. Well, wonder no more, because today we have an answer!

Hit the jump to see!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D‘s version of the Water Temple has toned down the difficulty in a good way. The basic temple challenge is still there, but with less frustration, making it much more of an enjoyable experience this time around.

To aid players in changing the water level inside the temple, some of the walls and doors inside the temple now have thick coloured lines around them, coming in red, blue and green. The image below shows an example; a door outlined in red, to guide players to a room where the water level can be changed. Each water level is allocated one of the three colours, giving players an easier time in navigating the temple.

A door outlined in red, in the Water Temple

Navigating the Water Temple made easier!

You may have noticed something else very interesting in that image. Another common complaint to hear in the Water Temple is how often players have to pause the game and go to the equipment screen to switch between the Kokiri Boots and the Iron Boots. The image shows that the Iron Boots have been switched to an item that can be put on or removed with a single touch, just like how the Iron Boots functioned in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

These two additions to the game, though small, will definitely make the Water Temple less of a frustrating experience for fans of The Legend of Zelda, both old and new. The changes are minor enough that older fans of the series shouldn’t worry about the game being ‘dumbed down’, but will definitely offer a helping hand for players who are playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the first time.

I had OOT on wii. stopped playing when i got past the water temple

That's a shame. There are some really memorable moments after the water temple… not to mention one of THE most epic final showdowns ever.

    • Anomynous

How could you!!!!!!!!! You Call yourself a fan!!!?

  • YAAAYYYY! I was stuck on the Water Temple for 6 months! 6 agonizing months! I'm definitely getting this game ๐Ÿ™‚

    • DekuScrub

Well As Long As You Didnt See The Walktrough Am Proud Of You….

      • As a committed Zelda fan, I have not used a walk through for any Zelda game I ever owned and played (which is all of them).

        • linkdude101

I wish I had your devotion. I usually try not to use one the first time and then play it like a year later without one at all.

    • aw9000

holy hyrule me too! only I didnt notice that all I had to do was swim to the bottom……. hehe hooray for light up doorways!

  • i still don't know why so many people hate the water temple and think it's oh so difficult. i beat it when i was 10 and didn't think it was terribly, impossibly difficult and frustrating… it's much more intimidating that the other temples, right. but that's what makes me like the water temple.

    • starwebs1

I also beat it when I was ten. Same reaction. More difficult than the others, but nothing too bad. I do like the Iron Boots being on the touch screen, because that's what most of the time I spent on the temple was: the pause screen.

      • Hylian Loach

I agree with the Iron Boots on the Touch Screen, just Tons faster

    • DekuScrub

I Agree..I Just Defeated The Water Temple 2 Weeks Ago….( I Was Busy Defeating Twilight Princes ) ….And Its Not That Hard… In Fact Twilight Princess Water Temple Was Much More Difficult Then The Water Temple On Ocarina Of The Time…So I Agree…

      • starwebs1

You Know What Would Be Fun? If I Typed With The First Letter Of Every Word Capitalized!

    • I didn't have much trouble with the Water Temple either, truth be told. I think I was expecting it to be harder after having heard so much about how TERRIBLE it was.

    • Link-182

I bea the water temple without a guide when I was 8! It took me like 5 months, but come on, I could do it when I was 8 years old. People need to learn perseverence!

    • mcdude910

I have to say that I like the idea of the iron boots being accessible with the push of a button, because that wasn't difficult or puzzling for me. It was just annoying. But, I don't like the light up doors thing. That was what made the Water Temple such a blast! I felt so good about myself after I found a door that I could never find before! There COULD be a difficulty option, that, not only made enemies take more hits, deal more damage, and be more plentiful, but also did things like take the lights off of the doors in the water temple.

    • Banooru

I beat it when I was 8 and I had a hard time, I think most of the difficulty came because I was too impatient to look around and got disoriented alot. I also liked to cross certain areas of dungeons off of my dungeon to do list, which made me miss a few keys (like the one on the second floor above the room where u meet ruto, or the one in the basement of the center tower).

  • Link

Now i know how you play MQ, too ๐Ÿ™‚
I like the trophy of Link when you pick a file, too! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • veeronic

for the 600th time, this dungeon is not hard.

    • Aura

The point is it got tedious to constantly pause the game to use the Iron boots and the Water Temple was pretty hard on new players. You can't honestly tell me you never even got lost once in the water tempe the first time you played it.

  • Aeolus

Good to hear! And chill out people, this doesn’t change the difficulty, it just makes it less irritating. No game’s challenge should be trying to make it through without getting so annoyed you have to stop playing

  • Hey Listen!!!

It's the one temple in this game that has a challenge in it (that being the confusion) I think this is going a little far. Not all the temples have to be baby easy:L

    • jacskel689

I disagree. I think these changes are minor, I'm an old fan and don't mind at all. And all the other temples aren't necessarily "baby easy". A lot of people (including me) have a little trouble on all the temples. I agree that the Water Temple wasn't really IMPOSSIBLY, TERRIBLY torturous at all, but a lot of people complain about the Iron Boots and water levels and small keys. It being "baby easy" is just your opinion.

  • Adam

My friend beat it when he was 8 pretty easily ๐Ÿ˜› can't wait to fail at it in 3D too!

  • Justin

I never understood why people think it's that hard of a temple to beat, the first time I played I beat it in a day, the master quest water temple is hard though, it took me awhile to get through that (and the master quest version of the well was also pretty difficult).

  • starwebs1

Awesome! English footage! And the menus look awesome, too! I love the way Link jumps now; it just feels more realistic.

  • Joe

The Water Temple, now for Babies….
We need a "play the game for me" button =3

    • jcfnav

That´s true, where are we going if we get hints everywere?
Sorry but this "adaptation" is c**p

  • You know, for some reason I don't remember the Water Temple being that difficult. I had more trouble with the Shadow Temple and beating Bongo Bongo. Hahaha. XD

    • starwebs1

I beat Bongo-Bongo in like, thirty seconds.

      • Haha. well, good for you. I just fail I guess. I kept missing with my arrows and then getting run over and falling off the drum thingy. I stopped playing for like three months so I could cool off.

        • starwebs1

What controller were you using? Cause if it was the Classic Controller I can understand your problems. I've never actually used the CC, but it just seems awkward to play N64 games with a SNES controller.

          • Yeah, it was a classic controller. Although that wasn't really my issue. I play SSBB with a classic controller just fine. It was just really difficult to get the timing right for me. I have bad aim I guess; either that or I was a chicken and I was too scared and shaky-handed to shoot well.

          • starwebs1

Lol SSBB is 2D, 3D games are harder with the CC.

          • -shrugs- I guess that means I took on a challenge then. I beat the game, didn't I? Haha. XD

    • D.A.

Bongo Bongo is one of the toughest bosses in OoT. Facing him with 3 hearts and without using Nayru's Love is quite a challenge. I cannot wait to face him in OoT3D's master quest!

  • DoctorYou

Glad to know that these changes take away the frustration without taking away that classic Water Temple feel and challenge. Ahh, nostalgia…

  • AwkwardPigeon

You know, this dungeon was my favorite actually. The frustration added to it. It really made you think broadly about the temple as a whole and how the different levels of water would effect different rooms. It is a shame people are so critical of it.

    • starwebs1

I agree with your post, but I think your username is the best part!

  • Callin

Aw man, I was hoping they'd add more floors and more places you'd have to change the water level. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • bob

I was hoping there was no water temple LOL :$

  • DekuScrub

I Would Totally Loved Zelda Twilight Princess If I Just Had Fought Dark Link….But Anyways One Of The Best Games Ive Ever Played…Ive Defeated Ocarina Of The Time Too…But I Think Killing Dark Link In Zelda Twilight Princess ( If We Were Able To Do That ) Would Have Been A Little More Challenging…iLovee The Game By The Way.. -Ocarina Of The Time…

    • starwebs1

@Myself replying to you before: SERIOUSLY? You're still capitalizing every word? And the game is called "Ocarina of Time" by the way.

      • adsghdrsf

  • A dro

No, i want the new younger breed of zelda fans to experience the cruelty and anguish i had to face when i played the water temple the first time… (just another example of the good and bad things of games being re-released)

  • AXBHikaru

Water Temple is actually my favorite dungeon in the entire game, my most hated dungeon is the Forrest Temple.

    • Chad

I hate the forest temples in all games they just don't look or feel cool

      • Chad

Please don't down thumb me just because I voiced my opinion it's not like I'm trolling and saying zelda sucks because it doesn't it's my over all favorite game I just don't like the forest temples they are all similar and I don't like them that's all so I would appreciate it if you wouldn't down thumb me thanks.

        • mcdude910

Thumbing down just means that a person disagrees with you. That doesn't mean they hate you, or think that you're a troll. They're just placing their opinion as you were.

    • D.A.

I loved the forest temple. The music was mesmerizing :3

  • Austin

how do get OOT on the wii, and yes this 3DS OOT is starting to sound really awesome, i really cant wait to buy it

    • starwebs1

Go into the Wii Shop Channel, search by system, and go to Nintendo 64. You'll find it eventually. It's ten bucks. I'd just wait for OoT3D, personally.

  • I liked the Water Temple! My least favourite was the Fire Temple. I had more trouble in there than the Water Temple.

    • I agree the fire temple was pretty hard but I beat it quickly surprisingly enough. Volvagia was the hardest part of that temple though because he took away like 3 hearts every time he hit you.

      • someone

the fire temple wasn't that hard………

        • mcdude910

I would say that the fire temple could be difficult at times, but also, it was fairly short, so it evened itself out quite nicely. I thought Volvaglia was a formidable opponent, but nothing really hard.

  • yanoit15

it may be weird but the water temple was my favorite.the difficulty was what i liked about it. even at my first time playing it, all the temples were easy. and it just added a big unexpected punch to the mix

  • Lucas

The water temple is not that bad, but I kinda think it might be on master quest because of the whole mirror thing. Oh and go Dark Link what an amazing boss.

  • Dyna

The Water Temple was really easy! I beat it in a day. (Obviously without any help).

  • The water temple took me like, a day. Deku nut everything. The puzzles werent that hard.

    • People hate the water temple a lot not just because of the puzzles, but the annoying process of raising and lowering water levels and going continually to the start screen to equip the Iron boots and then going back just to put on the Kokiri boots. Thus Nintendo made the annoying part of the Water Temple go away as you see in the post, which makes the puzzles a far more fun experience.

      • DarkLink :p

you my friend, just explained everyones problems with the water temple.

  • Bob

I think i was the only one that beat water temple without help.
I didn't find it difficult, I found it pretty cool. I was 8…
The temple I hated was shadow temple, because of the floormasters, and I wasn't a big fan of Forest Temple's music. I loved the Water Temple.

    • mcdude910

I wouldn't say that. Many people on this site, including me, don't use walkthroughs or get help on any of the Zelda games. I own all and have completed all except for LoZ and AoL, without a guide. I'm still having trouble with those games, but I'm never looking a guide.

  • Pucheros

It's not hard, It only twist your fucking brain

  • goronbot

    I like the changes

  • Keimori

I'm gona go ahead and say that the Iron boot fix alone would fix all the frusrations.

  • Guil.

Why am I the only one that actually likes the Water Temple? It's not hard or even that annoying.

  • cukeman

Din's fire? Why waste magic? Just use the Megaton Hammer without Z-targeting!

  • PITABread36

Honestly I didn't find the water temple to be too hard. It was just frustrating. I beat it with no guides in one weekend (adding up to 6 hours which is admittedly a long time for one dungeon). I am happy that the water temple will be made less frustrating but I hope that they keep the chalenge and that it will stay one of the more difficult Zelda temples.
