Link vs. Dark Link in Ocarina of Time 3D

Ah, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time‘s infamous Water Temple. Raising and lowering water levels, constantly putting on and taking off the Iron Boots, and that pesky Dark Link battle (good thing we always have Din’s Fire!). Many Legend of Zelda fans rank the Water Temple as their least favourite temple out of any of the games in the series.

Fans have been wondering if The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is going to keep the same challenge the Nintendo 64 version of the game offered, or if it’s going to be made slightly less frustrating. Well, wonder no more, because today we have an answer!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D‘s version of the Water Temple has toned down the difficulty in a good way. The basic temple challenge is still there, but with less frustration, making it much more of an enjoyable experience this time around.

To aid players in changing the water level inside the temple, some of the walls and doors inside the temple now have thick coloured lines around them, coming in red, blue and green. The image below shows an example; a door outlined in red, to guide players to a room where the water level can be changed. Each water level is allocated one of the three colours, giving players an easier time in navigating the temple.

You may have noticed something else very interesting in that image. Another common complaint to hear in the Water Temple is how often players have to pause the game and go to the equipment screen to switch between the Kokiri Boots and the Iron Boots. The image shows that the Iron Boots have been switched to an item that can be put on or removed with a single touch, just like how the Iron Boots functioned in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

These two additions to the game, though small, will definitely make the Water Temple less of a frustrating experience for fans of The Legend of Zelda, both old and new. The changes are minor enough that older fans of the series shouldn’t worry about the game being ‘dumbed down’, but will definitely offer a helping hand for players who are playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the first time.
