Nintendo of Japan today confirmed the rumor of the successor to the DS, which they have called the Nintendo 3DS. Its a new hand-held system which will incorporate 3D technology (presumably using Gamecube Power) and is scheduled to be released before March of 2011.

It is said to use 3D features without the use of 3D glasses, which makes it highly advanced in technology considering that it is a handheld console. DS/DSi games are confirmed to be backwards compatible with it.

It is confirmed that this new system will be unveiled at this year’s E3 show, which will take place between June 15-17.

Details are a bit slim for now, but more information would be revealed soon, so be sure to stay tuned for more updates from Nintendo.

When will 3DS lite be released?

3D with no glasses… kind of sounds like the Virtual Boy, just let's hope the history doesn't repeat and that Nintendo learned from that big fall.

    • EDracon

The virtual boy was released when still a prototype, This was tested and even has a pokemon game in the works for it. Also, apparently it's going to use a Tegra2 (has gamecube power, and HD output for handhelds), two screens, and 3D using cameras for head tracking, and a special screen. Only the head tracking part is a rumor.

Do we really need another handheld?

    • RRL

      You're kidding, right?

        No she isn't. We don't.

  • Dogma

Now I'm curious. A 3D DS? What is wrong with Nintendo nowadays?

  • Andy

    Say it! Nintendo 3DSiXL

I'm guessing the 3D effects will be done with maybe 3-4 transparent layers of screen. So when drawing a sprite, it could be drawn all the way at the back, or a millimeter or so closer to the player's eyes.

I highly doubt there'll be any 3D stuff jumping out of the screen. Technology just isn't that far yet.

    • Rystar

Are you kidding me? This kind of stuff exists, it's been in development behind the scenes and now it's being integrated into modern technology.

I believe by 3-D, the could also mean more on the lines of "literally" 3-D. You move your head to one side of the DS screen and see a whole new side of the picture. THAT is more then just possible, I saw early clips of a special screen that enabled you to examine the TV frame from every angle and it was like I was looking at something that existed in reality beyond the glass.

Just keep your mind open to "shocker" treatment, you may end up pleasantly surprised 🙂

      • Andy

I've seen the sort of 3D demonstration you mentioned on the DS.

Holograms are doable. Multicolor holograms is what I meant, and they are not yet possible on a scale that would look good on a portable console. Hell, even CNN's supposed hologram demonstration last november was a fake.

  • ChainofTermina

that sounds like it should be the name of Nintendo's 3rd DS system. and 3D as in like with the glasses? but without the glasses? that sounds just sounds like they've increased videogames' ability to induce migraines, which they do for me sometimes. and what does Gamecube Power mean exactly? will it have Gamecube level graphics?

I'm excited, but I mean, it's so close to April 1st…

    • Waker of Winds

Half of me is hoping that this might just be a prank…
The DS shouldn't "die" so early.

  • Z-MAN7

Nice, if this is a true upgrade from the DS (not another DSi model) with the power of a Gamecube. Count me in.

  • Sounds interesting! I don't know why the hell some people are *already* complaining about this new system. Some people just like to complain about just anything.

  • Having to play 3D games without the glasses really piqued my interest. I’m very excited to see what kind of design elements Nintendo will incorporate into both the hardware and software involved with this device. I'm pretty sure we're all on the same page on this one, right?

I dun even care if it’s a bad port of WW

oh please, no. I have enough eyestrain issues with 3D, and enough eyestrain issues with my DS Lite. let's not combine them…

  • ooccoowarrior

It looks like Hombre was right about the release date.

  • BoulderTheDragon

Hmmm…I’m partly worried, yet partly interested. Nintendo loves keeping gamers on edge with strange new devices that truly seem to work (sometimes). This sounds like it has potential, but let’s hope the gameplay isn’t lost in the midst of eye candy.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

Wait- What do you mean by "Gamecube power"? The Gamecube uses the same graphics engine as the Wii! So why are you praising the lesser console by saying that it is the GAMECUBE that has the power?

    • wiidude30

u got it all backwards. the wii CAN use the gcube's graphics engine, but other games have better graphics, and im sure the wii has an engine better than the gcube's. if it was the other way around, the wii woulndt have needed to be made. if the wii was made but ONLY had the gcube's SAME graphics, then, lets say, ssbb would look just like ssbm graphic wise.

besides, the grphics on the possible new ds might not be exact to the gcube's. im looking forward to this handheld, but im worried ppl might not like it, cuz they might think it's just another ds.
