GoNintendo recently partnered with Gamedaily to create a list of the top ten games for the Gamecube, and Wind Waker was placed in the #1 spot, beating out Resident Evil 4.

Zelda was not as lucky in the other lists, however. In the list for the top 10 NES games, AoL placed fifth, with no mention of the original LoZ, and Zelda didn’t place at all in the SNES top 10. For the N64 List, OoT and MM hit first and fifth place respectively, so overall, the 3D games received much better rankings than the earlier 2D games.

What do you think? Are the 3D Zelda games simply more appreciated than the 2D ones, or it is a case of the older consoles having vastly tougher competition?

    Shouldn’t MM be in 1st?

That game was much better than OOT in almost every way

Why thank you. I just know a lot about Legend of Zelda games. I was born in a family that loves Legend of Zelda. So I was forced to know. And I'm glad I do, because I found the perfect site to share my information and not become so crazy keeping it inside. So again thanks. I'm glad you read it all, not many people do that.

oh! uh…. your welcome. i just thought that was a nice refreshing change from all the "I HATE MODERN ZELDA GAMES! I WISH THEY WERE MORE LIKE THEY WERE IN THE LATE 80S! I HATE WW! I HATE TP! I WANT MORE CONFUSING, BARELY PLAYABLE, 8 AND 16 BIT 2D! WA WA WA WA!" that we've been getting in the last 2 weeks.

LOL Yeah, I know what you mean. It's always good to back your thought up with a lot of facts, you know? Yeah, it does suck.

            true that.

Say where's your site? Iwas wondering if we could be friends?

Sure people like the 3d ones more, but how did aLttP not get on the list. That's a load of crap.

    • Jones

I totally agree. Ocarina of Time was a masterpiece, but not including ALttP is complete BS.

    • Guest

I was surprised, too, but, at the same time, I can see it. SNES had a lot of ridiculously good games, especially RPG's.

I'm not surprised, TBQH, the 2D Zelda games haven't gotten as much fanfare from critics. Personally, I prefer 3D Zelda by a slight margin (as in the tip of a needle slight) because those games just can't be rivaled in terms of their scale and attention to detail, whereas 2D Zelda has to compete with Square Enix. When Final Fantasy went 3D, they went in a different direction than Zelda, so it stood alone. Only recently have other companies tried to compete with 3D Zelda's look and design, with games such as Okami and Monster Hunter Tri being the only games that were all out Zelda-based games (there's been a ton of Zelda clones, but they all go for a completely different asthetic, ex. Star Fox Adventures, Indiana Jones 64)

  • Shaggy

Yeah, seriosly it was one of the best NES games ever. I could see the original Mario Bros. beating it, but it not being on the list is a shame.

I always assumed the whole 2D vs 3D Zelda thing was a matter of opinion.

  • Feri-san

To be honest, event hough i've enjoyed the handheld Zelda's I've played, I do much prefer 3D zeldas a lot more… I don't know, i really love them over the handhelds… handhelds ar enot bad at all, but yeah 3ds for me.

    • Um, this isn't 3D vs. handhelds, it's 3D vs. the old games (LoZ, AoL, ALttP, and LA.) Out of those four, only LA is a handheld. The GBA remakes don't count, the first three are, and always will be, console games.

I don't think it has much to do about 3D or 2D.
the older games were just simply not that good and Link to the Past had a LOT of competition going against it. Most noticeably, Chrono Trigger, FFIII, Super Mario RPG, and a lot more. Though, I am actually still surprised it never reached at least 10. I thought it would be there somewhere.
    I don't think it's a trend, just a coincidence.

i agree with chainoftermina, i'm not saying 3-d games are better than 2-d games, really all zelda games are specials on it's own way ,i can't choose wich zelda is better, all of them are great, now, what really annoys me alot, is the fact that alot of people say "we want a 3d zelda game that plays like the ols ones" c'mon people, latter you will complain that is more of the same, or is not original, and if they chance the formula then you complain that is not good, but well, everyone have diferent opinions and i respect that, and to be honest, we don't need a magazine to tell us that the legend of zelda (all games) is the best videogame serie of all time =) (sorry for bad english)

  • Yusei

I have to say, I'm surprised ALTTP didn't get high on there, since it's still rather fun (even though I play the GBA remake, I still think it's a good SNES game). = BIAAAAASED people.

*waits for flames* I think MM is a TADDDD better than OOT in my opinion but eh. People have their likes.

  • Cukeman

The 3-D games immerse you in the adventure on a personal level. Not quite so much with the 2-D games, except for the excellent Link's Awakening. That's why action stands out more in 2-D games.

  • potato

I think that it is no doubt that the 2d games are good and fun but I think that 3d games are more fun because they are not as easy and it makes the game more realistic. Especially when you actually have to aim at something. I think that the 2d games are too easy. I know that Wind Waker was easy, but the whole 3d thing makes the game look a whole lot better too.

  • king of pie

I agree with most of this, but the 2d games are fun.

    • ChainofTermina

I never said the 2D games weren't fun. I love the Minish Cap.

      • Margar

Not to split hairs here, but it's not exactly "easier to see what's going on" in a 3D world where you can be attacked from behind and not see until you turn around, unlike a 2-d top-down game.

  • Feri-san

Maybe that was because TP was also for the WII so they neutralized it on the Gamecube list? I don't know really. I did like WindWaker but man, tP was really good too D:!

  • N64 Games FTW

I like a few of the 2D games, but the 3D games add a feel that is unparrelled.
So I think yeah, 3D games are more Appreciated.

But I would like to see more 2D games come out, that companies actually worked on like in the Olden Days. (Not just Zelda games)
There are just too many 3D games, out there.

We need more 2D games, they are fun as well!

  • Edracon

I like WindWaker due to it's amazing art style. And it was truley brought to life by the 3d aspect of it.

  • Tsubasa_Z

I love WW and I love MM, I played aLttP severeal times. All are great, but the point is: It's easier to like a 3D game than a 2D game now we are used to 3D gaming. In the day of the 2D games Graphics weren't as important as now. The best proof would be a new 2D zelda, why not for the Virtual Console on the Wii. With the kind of graphics the console can provide, it can and will compete with all the 3D games (not that the old ones don't). Just like mario is doing now.
3D isn't better, it looks better. And now a days that more important to some people than the gameplay.

  • Margar

I think that one reason the 3D zeldas fared better is that there were more solidly good games on SNES than on 64. If you think about it, 64 had a few really great solid classic games, but I think SNES had more. not to mention that there was more competition from the likes of sony and sega by the time the 64 came out. When you're choosing from a larger list of phenominal games, it's more likey that the zeldatitles wouldn't be as high on the list. I mean you had Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Contra, Mega man, Mario World, and so may other fantastic SNES games back in the day. when it comes to 64, it was basically Mario 64, Goldeneye, Oot, and MM (I know I'm leaving plenty out, but I still think that the competition was thicker in the SNES days)

  • jibbity

I think it's not so much that the 3D games are more appreciated as it is a combination of different factors. If anything, the 3D games get more flak because they don't have the drastic room for evolution (graphically) that 2D games did back in the day.

Gameplay-wise, the possibilities are limitless and we have Nintendo to thank for taking a chance on new technology and pushing games in the right direction (and thankfully the other companies are now following suit). The improvement in graphics slows exponentially whereas things like motion sensing and other innovative technologies can help it take off in other ways.

I'm surprised that the original LoZ wasn't listed but not so surprised that it was beat out by Zelda II, being that many people now realize how well it was put together regardless of what people thought when it first came out.

But when you think about it, the market is saturated (like most markets these days) by less-than-worthy titles whereas the NES and SNES were both incredible systems where just about every game was worth its salt in some way or another. You had all the original franchises and then some to contend with.

  • The Khaion

I think the 3D games are better because it's such a great adventure when you can nearly see everything if ya know what I mean :]

  • Justin Basl

my favorite 2-D zelda is " A Link to the Past" and it will never be boring. Once Ocarina of time came out, it was so new and exciting, I played it for at least two weeks, three times over, non-stop.

I think it's great that 3-D is more appreciated than 2-D games, that just means that the gaming world is evolving, and it should. However, every REAL gamer always will go back and appreciate the old games, like 2-D or 8-bit or 16-bit, and ect. It gives the gamer everything to appreciate when the first arcades like pong or sapce invaders, came out to the public.

I remember going to the thirft store, and buying an artari system with at least 30 games. I played them for a little bit, but I always will appreciate the fact that games looked from little to amazing graphics.

  • The Minish Cap had the sexiest pixels I have have ever seen in a 2D Zelda.

3D is okay but Pixel Art is much harder then 3D renders can be.

    • Edracon

I agree with you on the first half, but 3D games can actually be incredibly difficult to make, Many bugs, glitches, etc, happen when rigging and animating a model. And then you still have to try to get that model to have less less and less polygons while still making it look like it has alot.

  • dragohan

Lol. Because 3d zeldas are better doesnt mean they are more fun. people like me, even though im only 22, still want 2d zelda's because they seem more fun. And offcourse Im talking handheld 😛

  • Zhero

No, the problem is the generation DS, who make infantile zelda games.

  • Pandora21

ya i for one am more fond of the 3D game because well… you have more freedom people!
