Breath of the Wild: 10 characters that were surprisingly entertaining
Exploration is the name of the game when it comes to Breath of the Wild, along with the breathtaking landmarks, beautiful towns, and mysterious ruins featured in the land of Hyrule. Not only did the landscape show a new kind of Hyrule that was once only feasible for the imagination, but it also expanded upon the individual stories of hundreds of NPCs. This was a feat that no Legend of Zelda game had ever ventured into before, let alone naming and establishing world building for every single character. With that said, let’s give credit to some of the most entertaining ones Link has encountered in his adventures.
Bear in mind that the Champions, the Champions’ descendants, or Zelda herself are purposely not featured in this list. It’s time for the dark horses of Breath of the Wild characters to shine for a change!
10. Bozai

There are NPCs, and then there are those NPCs who are so hilariously real you can’t seem to shake them out of your mind. Enter Bozai, the Sand Boots guy. Camping outside of Gerudo Town, this womanizing fellow hopes that his pair of Sand Boots will one day catch a girl. But little does he know, it catches a hero who’s cross-dressing as a girl and hoodwinking him to hand over his boots in a sidequest not once, but twice. The whole routine is clever writing on the developers’ part and tells a subtle message about the power of appearance in persuasion.
9. Loone

The name says it all. If Link heads over to Puffer Beach in the Faron Region, he will witness one of the most bizarre love stories in his whole life. A lone Hylian girl caresses an ancient Sheikah orb on a desolate beach and calls it Roscoe. We’re not sure if she’s trying to reenact a scene from Castaway or Lord of the Rings here, but she definitely seems to have lost her marbles. Perhaps that’s precisely the point.
8. Bolson

Bolson is simply one of those Zelda characters who can get away with dishing out that quirky charm to the max. Perhaps the easiest way to describe him would be some bizarre crossover between the construction guys from Ocarina of Time and Tingle. But unlike Tingle, Bolson is much less greedy. After Link is determined to rescue the old house Bolson Construction is demolishing, Bolson decides to cut the young lad a reasonable deal. He also supports one of his staff members in his vision to build the brand new Tarrey Town, a very fun and hopeful part of the game.
7. Patricia

Lady Riju’s prized sand seal is not only cute and doted upon by her master, but she also wins the seal of approval in tacky entertainment. With the help of her interpreter Padda, Patricia will gladly offer her sagely seal wisdom to Link if he gives her fruit in return. She even throws in a free seal-a-rific pun, much to her interpreter’s chagrin. What a seal of a deal.
6. Robbie

There’s no doubt this quirky Sheikah scientist is entertaining (and probably needs to get out more). When speaking with him, Robbie will demand that Link removes his clothes and show him all of his scars in order to prove he’s the true hero. Robbie also loves his robot as much as his wife. Talk about awkward. Unfortunately, much of Robbie’s work is already overshadowed by Purah by the time Link gets to him. Oh well. At least his younger self makes a snazzy comeback in Age of Calamity.
5. The Old Man

Link’s first encounter after his century-long slumber is with an Old Man by a fire, a delightful callback to the very first Legend of Zelda. But as the game progresses, it is clear that the Old Man’s mysteries are not empty-handed. He reveals himself to Link as the ghost of King Rhoam, which reminds fans of another memory, this time King Daphnes’s epic reveal in The Wind Waker. By combining old memories with fresh experiences, The Old Man is no doubt a great way for players of all ages to cast off into a whole new Breath of the Wild adventure.
4. Kass

It can get pretty lonely for Link wandering out in the wild. Luckily, he stumbles upon a friendly Rito minstrel in his travels by the name of Kass. This feathered fellow quickly became a fan favorite after the game was released. His songs bring cheer to the desolate lands, and they explain some intriguing background between Link and Zelda in their pre-calamity days. Most of all, his children are so darn cute! Their accompanying side quest is a must for any player.
3. Master Kohga

It’s natural to think that the leader of a cult who wishes to revive Ganon out of spite would be quite bone-chilling. But once Link finally goes toe-to-toe with the Yiga’s head honcho, it turns out that Master Kohga’s bark is worse than his bite. His memorably goofy performance won the hearts of many fans, which motivated the developers to give him an even better reprise in the Age of Calamity spin-off. After all, he is “The One! The Only! The Strong! The Burly! MASTER KOHGA!”
2. Purah

This spunky Sheikah scientist is arguably one of the most entertaining characters in the whole game. When he meets Purah, she doesn’t even want to reveal her super youthful self to him until Link finally figures it out. Once Purah comes out of her shell, get ready to whip out the popcorn. She goes into full scientist mode and is not shy about examining her poor post-Calamity hero from top to bottom. Maybe she gets away with it because of her childish looks. Check it!
1. Magda

Perhaps better known as “Flower Blight Ganon,” this wacky lady has become quite the famous internet meme. All Magda wants to do is tend to her garden of beautiful flowers. They spiral all the way around a Shrine that Link wants to access. But, there’s a grave problem. Link can’t touch a single petal along the way without the lady going bonkers. Not even a brush! If he commits the misdemeanor three times, Magda’s feral side activates. She beats Link to the point of blacking him out, sparing only an inch of his life. Hence the terrible nickname, “Flower Blight Ganon.”
Because of these reasons, Magda and the sidequest “Watch Out for the Flowers” is so surprisingly entertaining, she is the latest Zelda character that everyone loves to despise. One player even decided to glitch the final boss fight of Ganon himself to remove Magda and tramp on her flowers in revenge. Now that definitely earns Magda the top spot on this list!
