To celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a group of hardcore fans have decided to create a version playable on personal computers. Requiring a legal acquired ROM of Twilight Princess, the port is able to be downloaded on macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Featuring much higher frame rates, resolutions and quality of life improvements, Dusklight is a considerable improvement over the original game. It even supports custom texture packs, models and more for modding. A randomizer is coming soon.
Created through a process called reverse engineering, the developers behind Dusklight began decompiling the original game’s code in 2020. It has since been rebuilt from the ground up with modern computer code. The result is a version of Twilight Princess that is comprised of original content and doesn’t break Nintendo’s copyright laws. It also doesn’t contain any Nintendo-owned textures, music, models, sound effects or any other assets. All material distributed by the team behind Dusklight remain entirely original.
This Twilight Princess project is one of many Zelda PC ports made using reverse engineering. Past ports include those of Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and A Link to the Past. A few days before Dusklight was released, a PC port of The Minish Cap was released by a different developer. See the trailer for yourself below.
