Switch 2 becomes the fastest selling Nintendo console ever

Lightning truly does strike twice. After a dramatic journey through its launch campaign, the numbers are officially in for new Switch 2 console sales, and the results are staggering. Over 3.5 million units have sold worldwide in a mere four days, making it the fastest selling Nintendo console to date. That’s over 25% of lifetime sales for the Wii U console in all of its market years combined.

It’s a strong start indeed for the fledgling console, which in truth, does not feel like a fledgling whatsoever. Over two dozen games were available at launch day for the Switch 2, more than twice as many as the launch day of its predecessor. Granted, many of these titles were rereleases and / or remasters, such as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. But when the games now glide like butter with 60 frames per second and rich HD visuals (and 4K when docked) with a handsome JoyCon feel and a superior Switch 2 Pro controller, who’s complaining?

Gamers noted at launch day that even regular Switch titles that did not have so-called updates received significant frame rate improvement on the Switch 2, with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity being a prime example. The game is notorious for lagging frame rates and chugging engines struggling to keep up with hundreds of characters on the screen. But with the Switch 2, those days are numbered.

Washington Post reporter Gene Park demonstrates significant Age of Calamity improvements on the Switch 2.

Such updates are a welcome surprise for players who now have high hopes for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment on the horizon, which launches this winter. In addition to powerful visuals, the Switch 2 is the first Nintendo console to have mouse functionality and video chat. “In addition to upgraded features, Nintendo Switch 2 offers new ways for people to connect and play together,” says Takuro Horie, Managing Director of Nintendo Australia in a press release. “We are grateful for the response it has already received, and we hope players will continue to enjoy the new experiences offered.”
