Zelda fan album “Songs of the Goddess” pays tribute to the franchise’s iconic soundtracks

Zelda’s iconic music is known all over the world, and a new album by Enrique Ponce, “Songs of the Goddess” seeks to pay tribute to the long tradition of Zelda music.

The album contains a mix of classic songs and new pieces inspired by the world of Zelda for a total of twelve tracks. The album’s opener and closer both come from the 2011 Wii title Skyward Sword, being arrangements of Fi’s theme and the Ballad of the Goddess respectively. Other tracks use classic melodies, or leitmotifs, and weave them into new ideas to create something entirely unique and original.

A consistent melody through most of the album is the Temple of Time theme, which appears in multiple tracks such as The Lonely Temple, Children of the Forest, Season of the Fallen, The Red Moonrise, and Tears of the Maiden. Using and expanding upon classic leitmotifs helps connect the album to the musical identity of the series while taking advantage of the pre-existing connotations to create an emotional response.

A leitmotif is a recurring theme used to remind the audience of a particular concept, idea, person, or emotion. For example, the Colgera boss music from Tears of the Kingdom uses the Rito leitmotif of Dragon Roost Island to remind the audience who they are fighting for, helping to create one of the most epic moments in the game. Much in the same way, “Songs of the Goddess” uses leitmotifs to elicit emotional responses built over 30 years of musical history and assists in giving the album a rather cinematic feel.

In addition to the numerous leitmotifs, the album contains tiny musical easter eggs to various tracks, such as the dissonant synth notes in Watch of the Wisps, which seem to call back to Twilight Princess’ City in the Sky. Countless moments like this are peppered throughout the entire album, and one could likely go on forever trying to find every subtle reference throughout each track.

“Songs of the Goddess” by Enrique Ponce can be found on YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, and Deezer. CD pre-orders are available on Bandcamp and Materia Store.
