Zelda Universe is looking to bring in new List Writers

If you love The Legend of Zelda and are interested in joining our team to write list-based articles, Zelda Universe wants to hear from you!

As one of the oldest and largest communities of Legend of Zelda fans on the web, Zelda Universe is the perfect place to share your passion for Link’s and Zelda’s many adventures. We’re currently accepting applications for volunteers to become list writers as part of our Features Team. Since no two Legend of Zelda fans think exactly alike, lists are among the most popular pieces that we publish. There is never any shortage of discussion to be had about how a particular set of subjects or topics are ranked.

THE ROLE OF LIST WRITERS

A list writer’s goal is to create a ranking of what they believe are the best choices within a specific topic. These lists typically include rankings with 10 entries and are written in countdown format, although alternate approaches may be used depending on the subject. When writing lists, anything within The Legend of Zelda is on the table, whether it be from the video games, the manga adaptations, or any other form of media.

A list could be something that analyzes a certain aspect of existing Legend of Zelda products, such as our ranking of The Top 10 dungeon entrances in the series. Or, it could be something that lists predictions and hopes for upcoming releases, like our list for 10 useful items that need to return in a future Zelda game. We’re looking for writers who have creative ideas for lists that explore unique elements of the franchise, and topics that are sure to get our readers talking.

HOW TO APPLY

If you are interested in this position, please send us your application to jobs@zeldauniverse.net with the subject header “List Writer Application.”

Please include:

Your name
Your age
3-to-4 list topic ideas that you would be interested in writing
Your resume (or an overview of your qualifications and work experience)
Any social media accounts you’d like to share (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)

Please also provide at least one of the following:

Writing samples (articles, blogs, essays, fictional works, etc.)
Mock drafts of Zelda-related lists

It may take us a little while for us to select the most suitable applicants, so please don’t feel discouraged if we don’t respond straight away. It may take up to a week or longer before we select you.

We’re very professional about what we do here, but we also have a ton of fun while doing it! We have a highly talented and very friendly team ready to welcome you.

We’d like to reiterate that all members of the Zelda Universe staff are volunteer positions. We do this for our love of The Legend of Zelda and to share in that passion for the series alongside the countless other fans around the world.

GENERAL FAQ

HOW DO THE WRITING TEAMS AT ZELDA UNIVERSE OPERATE?

All of the content you see on the Zelda Universe home page is published using WordPress. If you’ve never used WordPress before, it is very easy to learn and we can run you through the whole process. You do not need to set up your own WordPress account; we’ll be setting you up with your own WordPress account specifically for Zelda Universe.

We use the instant messaging application Slack for the majority of our teams’ communication. If you’ve never used Slack before, it works similarly to Discord or Skype, with various channels for each team.

We also use Trello to coordinate all of our drafts, projects, and ideas. Each team has its own Trello board. Again, we’ll set this up for you and you will receive an invite to our own Trello boards.

HOW OFTEN WOULD I NEED TO CONTRIBUTE NEW PIECES?

We are all volunteers here at Zelda Universe, and we understand as well as anybody else how hectic life can be, but we would expect our list writers to contribute a minimum of one new list every 1-to-2 months. If you are feeling especially productive and would like to contribute more than that, we will certainly publish whatever you come up with!

WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED FOR THIS POSITION?

A working computer and an internet connection — that’s it!

I LOVE TO WRITE BUT I DON’T HAVE MUCH PAST EXPERIENCE. WILL I STILL BE CONSIDERED?

Yes! While we’re interested in seeing any previously published works or articles applicants may have, there are still many ways you can demonstrate your writing abilities. You can send us any blogs, essays, fictional works, or any pieces you are proud of.

If you’re still short on samples, we are also very interested in seeing any mock articles you can produce for the site. Just take a look at our previously published articles on the home page to get a feel for our format, and give it a shot!

WHAT ARE THE PERKS OF WRITING FOR ZELDA UNIVERSE?

There are two common reasons why people join our team: fun and experience.

For fun: Writing is always fun, and so is sharing what you wrote. If you’re a Legend of Zelda fan who loves to share their thoughts in a creative way, writing for Zelda Universe is the perfect way to do that. There is an endless variety of different topics to let your imagination run wild writing about.

For experience: As one of the oldest and largest Legend of Zelda communities out there, Zelda Universe has thousands of regular readers and social media followers. For those of you looking to gain some experience in the field of writing, this is an opportunity to learn how to write content for a large audience.

Building a resume and portfolio of work is essential for those seeking work in all writing-centered and creative fields, and our staff is more than happy to help you improve your writing as you go.
