Zelda’s Study: Sahasrahla’s name might take inspiration from Hinduism

Elder of Kakariko Village and one of the first mentor characters in the Zelda series, Sahasrahla is the old man who points Link toward the Pendants in A Link To The Past, as well as providing him with the Pegasus Boots. Sahasrahla has the power of telepathic communication, able to talk directly to Link no matter where he is. Truth be told, he’s a rather forgettable character, more memorable for his mouthful of a name than any role he plays in the story. With a name like that, one can’t help but wonder where it’s origins lie, and one of the chakras of Hinduism, Sahasrara, has a very similar name.

Also known as the “Crown Chakra” due to it’s aura being located at the crown of one’s head, Sahasrara is the seventh primary chakra in some cultures and represents concepts related to the conciousness and thought. Sahasrahla might have been named something similar to Sahasrara as a nod to his telepathic abilitiy, since the chakra usually repesents some form of mental power. It’s also possible that, as an elder, he was named after something sounding mystical as a general reference to his status as a descendent as one of the Seven Wise Men and someone with mystical abilities.

Unfortunately, since Sahasrahla as a character isn’t very involved, there isn’t much else we can observe about the relationship between the elder and the chakra. Despite not having the biggest role in the story of A Link To The Past, I have never been able to get the name Sahasrahla out of my head ever since my first time playing the game, so exploring it’s origins fills a small but long standing void of curiosity in my heart. It might just be one of the most memorable names in all of Zelda.
