Yuga’s Art Gallery: Midna the Twilight Witch

“By the pricking of my thumb, something wicked this way comes…”

Twili Midna, the Twilight Princess, captures a mystic beauty of shadow-like magic and the glow of the evening hour that is neither day nor night. Descended from a tribe of Hylians embracing dark magic and wicked ways, comparing her kind to the likes of witches would not be a far stretch. The Realm of Twilight reflects the perfect aesthetic for a dark witch of unimaginable power. Automatic Giraffe has redesigned Princess Midna’s design to reflect an ancient witch embracing the magic hour her people are named after.

Twili Midna’s design already holds mystical and “witch” like qualities with her pale skin, dark clothes embroidered with symbols and patterns of Twilight, and the blue glowing patterns wrapped around her legs and arms. Automatic Giraffe uses these features as a base to twist Twili Midna’s design from a Princess of Twilight to a Witch of Twilight. Her gorgeous cloak has been torn and tattered at the ends as if she has been wandering the woods, the cloak constantly getting caught on branches, but she doesn’t have the heart to replace it. The cloak is something of value. Wrapped around her shoulders it assists in making her feel powerful and confident in who she is. And after much thought, the tattered cloak makes her look all the more powerful and dangerous.

Of course, no witch is complete without a pointed hat. Borrowing the color designs of Midna’s clothes, Automatic Giraffe dresses her in a black pointed hat with a blue Twilight pattern wrapping around the middle. Underneath the black fabric, an aqua blue glows with shadowed patterns crawling up to the center of the hat. The large size of the hat reinforces the ancient aesthetic of her witch design. There’s a wisdom to her appearance but also a hidden power thrumming with danger. Head low and cloak flowing behind her, this Twilight Witch stalks the shadows of Twilight with great power in her hands.

A subtle but empowering part of the piece is Midna’s wink and slight smirk hiding underneath the hat. Witches are crafty creatures, and historically have the charms and seduction to get what they want, with or without the aid of magic. The way Twili Midna looks beyond the canvas is one of knowing. One particular quote from Twilight Princess comes to mind: “What? Say something! Am I so beautiful that you’ve no words left?”

The Twilight aesthetic is one of shadows and twisting symbols perfect for the likes of a wicked witch. Twili Midna is of equal mystical qualities that even without a witch attire, she is a woman of power. The tattered cloak and witch hat that Automatic Giraffe created in her new design gives her an ancient witch-like appearance that enhanced all that was empowering about her previous design. There is no doubt that if Twili Midna were indeed a witch, she would be one of dangerous beauty that could ensnare all that cross her.
