Here’s our first look at a Nintendo Switch OLED unboxing

I must confess, I’ve seldom seen the appeal of unboxing videos. There’s a certain zen to them, I’ve been told, but I guess I just can’t feel it.

Unless it involves a Nintendo Switch OLED, in which case my face is as close to my laptop screen as possible and my heart rate spikes with hype.

YouTuber Nintendo Prime has been blessed with exactly the right kind of subscriber: the kind who gets their hands on something ahead of schedule and lets the channel broadcast their early acquisition. The subscriber, who has elected to remain anonymous like some sort of video game Batman, showcases the Switch OLED’s substantial screen size and beautiful brightness in the above video.

As always, YouTube compression does things a bit dirty, but it’s relatively apparent here how much more vibrancy the OLED display can bring to the table. Equally impressive is the “screen real estate,” proving once and for all that, while a seven-inch picture doesn’t sound like all that big a deal, it almost manages to make the original Switch screen look like a smartphone in portrait mode by comparison.

If you watch the video, take note of the robust kickstand and other minor hardware revisions. The Switch OLED model is shaping up to be the definitive way to play, especially since we live in a world where the long-rumored 4K “Switch Pro” only exists as some kind of tired Schrödinger experiment.
