Realm of Memories: A picture perfect birthday

Homemade gifts are the best kind of gifts. Not only are they one-of-a-kind but knowing that someone has put the time and effort into creating something special, that is especially for you, is the best kind of feeling. It comes from the heart and brings with it a sense of cherishing that cannot easily be bought from a store.

Homemade gifts are also perfect for someone like me because not only am I a complete sucker for all things homemade, I am also the worst kind of person to buy for. I have no idea what to answer when someone asks me the dreaded question of what I would like for a birthday or Christmas, and unless someone can magically warp me into a Legend of Zelda game, there is not much I desire. However, with the courage, power, and wisdom of a true hero, my husband always seems to make things picture-perfect for me.

My husband is the type of person who, when he puts his mind to something, achieves great things. He is modestly talented when it comes to picking up new skills and hobbies which is something that I have always admired. So, when I asked if he would make me something for my birthday, there was no hesitation and, despite not doing any art since his school days, he was at our local crafts store in a flash.

At this point in time, I had been clocking a lot of gameplay hours with Breath of the Wild so it was no mystery to how my husband found his inspiration. Alongside this, I had been talking non-stop about how the game was the only installment that made me feel how Ocarina of Time made me feel, which is something that is of major importance to me. With this knowledge and armed with a fancy new sketchpad, pencils, and paint pens, my birthday project began.

I don’t think there are enough balloons.

Every day after work my husband would take a few hours to sit in our gaming room and work on my birthday surprise. Sometimes, I could hear him getting so frustrated that I half expected him to give up, but a Spiers never gives up and he continued to push through all of the trials and errors. One month passed and finally, after all of the researching, planning, drawing, coloring, and maybe some swearing, my gift was completed.

I woke up on the morning of my birthday to our entire bungalow filled with 420 balloons and a very proud husband who presented me with my homemade surprise. Unwrapping it carefully, I welled up with tears of happiness at the framed piece of art that was so lovingly made just for me. A true monument to the Champions of Breath of the Wild and a token of love, it is my most valued and favorite gift that I have ever received. From the smaller details, such as my husband’s hidden initials that can be found throughout the piece to the character placement, sizing, and colors, it is a masterpiece of the heart.
