Developer programs Game Boy Color to control his air conditioner

JinGen Lim, a developer based in Singapore, was gifted a Game Boy Color and the first thing he thought to do was play through Oracle of Seasons — no, wait, that’s not quite right. According to my notes, he wanted to program it to control his air conditioning unit.

Huh. There is a detailed breakdown over on his blog, but, essentially, he reworked an IR sensor in the Game Boy to “blink” at his A/C unit. This turns the Game Boy into a remote where he can control temperature and fan speed.

It is fascinating to see a development community that still thrives on decades-old hardware and appears to have boundless imagination.
