Zelda’s Study: The sages of Breath of The Wild’s Sword Monk Shrine pay homage to Ocarina of Time

Breath of the Wild is the largest open-world Legend of Zelda game that has ever graced our screens. Whether you love it or hate it, you cannot deny that this dystopian Hyrule is packed with an abundance of nostalgic Easter eggs and secrets waiting to be discovered. Some call-backs to previous instalments are more obvious than others but the offerings always bring a continuous flood of momentous excitement and wonder.

As an avid fan of Breath of the Wild and Ocarina of Time, I was dumbfounded when I came across a revelation that was found in 2018 on Reddit. User kamuilyn posted their discovery after realizing that the seven un-named monks who watch over the Master Sword in the Sword Monk’s Shrine are, in fact, a glorious nod to the seven sages present in Ocarina of Time!

“Okay, so I just finished the Trial of the Sword and immediately noticed the 7 monks are representing the 7 Sages,” says kamuilyn on the Breath of the Wild subreddit.

Mind = blown.

Featuring the likes of Princess Zelda, Rauru, Darunia, Princess Ruto, Nabooru, Impa and Saria, the monks are frozen in the sages’ iconic, Ganon-butt-kicking poses.

It’s the little things like this that really do make you appreciate the smaller, yet impacting, details that can be found throughout one of history’s greatest gaming franchises, and it seems like The Legend Zelda developers never miss a trick in encouraging their fanbase to reminisce on previous, beloved moments of the series.
