South Clock Town is the largest part of Clock Town and is where most of the important plot points of Majora’s Mask take place. It is here that the Clock Tower is found, which is the physical center of the town, the focus of the festival, the location of the bridge between Hyrule and Termina, and the only way to reach the showdown with Skull Kid. The importance of the area cannot be overstated.
Being at the center of Clock Town, South Clock Town has many avenues and exits. All other parts of Clock Town can be accessed from here, including the secluded Laundry Pool. Clock Town’s gateway to the Southern Swamp is located here as well. And as mentioned, the portal to Hyrule is found past the Clock Tower’s double doors.

Not many people permanently reside within South Clock Town, since the area serves more a town square for events, but there are few characters to be found. Inside the Clock Tower is where the Happy Mask Salesman remains throughout the duration of Majora’s Mask. He eagerly (and creepily) awaits Link’s return with his precious Majora’s Mask in hand. There is also a Business Scrub who Link must barter with to get the deed to a Deku Flower, which Link uses in order to reach the top of the tower at the end of the Third Day.

Link can also find Mutoh and the Carnival Committee hard at work preparing the fireworks-viewing tower. Much like his Ocarina of Time counterparts, Mutoh is a very strong-willed and demanding man, much to the chagrin of his often-lazy workforce. He forces his team to work almost non-stop for his mission to have the platform ready for the Carnival of Time.

The Carnival of Time is an annual event held by the residents of Clock Town, with its focus being on the aforementioned literal center of the entire city: the Clock Tower. A massive stone construct, the tower is the symbol of all traditions in Termina, and despite not all of its history being disclosed, the value the Terminians place on it cannot be ignored. There is a reason Mutoh is fully dedicated to seeing the festival take place, even with the imminent danger of a falling moon. Watching the clock’s doors open with the fireworks lighting the night sky overhead is something he and many others are not keen to abandon.

Ultimately, what matters most in South Clock Town is the showdown that takes place at the top of the tower. During Link’s adventure through Termina, the Skull Kid waits patiently on the tower’s peak, summoning the moon to come down and lay waste to everything. He takes his time and apparently wants to make the destruction of Termina poetic by bringing the moon down right as the carnival begins. From certain areas, such as the observatory, the Skull Kid can be seen hovering beneath the moon. His presence is eerie and constant, just like the Moon itself.

South Clock Town is the epicenter of the town, the land of Termina, and the game’s narrative. Despite not being as busy or occupied as the other parts of Clock Town, its importance to Majora’s Mask‘s opening and finale make this section the foundation for the entire adventure.
